Sorry for your loss!  One of the saddest facts of life is that our family members that happen to be dogs have such shorter lifespans.  :'(  It sounds like you gave him the best life he could hope for.

My thoughts are with you, shorthair15.

Our family's GSP is 5.5 years old and I am already dreading "the day," whenever it may come.

Take care,

When I had to put down my first hunting dog it tore me up. I was a miserable SOB.  My wife told me to go pick out a dog after me moaping around for a year. She said if I dont pick one out she would, and it would be some  pocket pup...

Best thing to do is go get another one asap it helps fill the hole in your heart.

Been there, done that - it was terrible and I'm truly sorry for your loss and what you're going through. Know that it will get better, tho -eventually you'll be able to look back on the good times and smile.

I did cry for a good week though, and then on occasion when something triggered a memory. Let's just say I had a lot of things suddenly get into my eye for a while afterward and cause a lot of watering... ;)

Seriously, though  - I know it's tough and I'm sorry for you and your friend.

Sad times, so sorry for you and your family.

My dad has been gone for 12 years, and I will still occasionally have dreams with him in them. They are always good dreams, it’s like he’s right there. I hope your buddy will visit you from time to time.

RIP comet.

I feel for you shorthair15. So tough emotionally to loose a loved one,  even if they have hair all over and walk on all fours.. I had to put my 13 year old Male GSP down 4 months ago due to cancer. This may sound shallow but, it was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. He was my buddy and he had no idea what was going on when I brought him to the Vet. I still feel guilty today even though I know I did the right thing. With time it does get easier. I said I didnt want to get another Dog because it was so hard losing Zeke and such a PIA when you want to go on a trip, but last night my Wife caught me looking at GSP puppies on line. All I could think about was all of the great times Zeke and I had together and how I would love another chance at having such a great friend. Sorry you are having to endure this, time will heal and the awesome memories will start flooding back.

Sorry for your loss.  We went thru this in January with our Lab.  She hid her cancer from us for a long time, not letting on that anything was wrong.  We found out because she was down and not wanting to move.  By that time there was no decision to make, putting her down was the only ethical thing to do.  You may feel guilty, but you did the right thing, your GSP went out peacefully and knew he was loved.

I am so sorry for your loss.  Like others, it's so hard to read these posts.  Even though we hate reading these posts, I think we all still do, just to hear about the love that we all share towards our pups.  We like to hear about their hunting successes and their playful ways.  It sounds like your pup had a wonderful life.  RIP Comet.
