scope or red dot for my turkey shotgun????

So, my eyes are getting bad.

I want to swap to a red dot or scope for my shotgun.
(I'm not buying a new shotgun).

It's a over/under.


Is there any kind of clamp on scope or dot to help me out this ear?

How about a 3x pop up magnifier like some red dot manufacturers are offering these days? You could use that in conjunction with your current red dot? Depends on how much room on your rail I guess!

For a short time my first AR15 I equipped with an eotech and a 3x magnifier on it, pretty nifty but I sold the optics like a fool back in 2010

I've been looking for one myself.  What I've found is a separate clamp on rail, but it's for 3/8" wide ribs.  For the smaller ribbed o/u's Aimpoint has just one model out that is made for the skinnier ribs.  It lists for about $800.

I tried a rib clamp mount and red dot last Fall on my 870 Express.  It and the red dot flew off and hit me in the face on my 12th shot.

 I started with low power 2 ¾ cheap birdshot to pattern/sight it in and then switched to sight in 3” 00 Buck and 7/8 oz. high velocity slugs.  IMO a rib mount will not hold the recoil of normally heavy shotgun loads and I do not trust it to hold the recoil of any size shotgun loads for long.

I am considering one of the saddle mounts for pump shotguns.  They all appear to leave a gap under the  top to see the iron sights under.  I would prefer one that fits tightly down on top of the receiver. I don't know if they make a saddle mount for an over and under but would think so. 

Hijacking this thread a bit but does anyone know if there is a low fitting saddle mount for Remington 870 that fits snugly down on the top of the receiver.  It would have no gap between mount and receiver?

FWIW I really like the red dot on my .22 rifle and since my legs don't backpack hunt as well anymore, I went to a shotgun on easy ground near town last Fall, and want a red dot for shotgun deer.

I like the red dots. Seem to give you a little better field of view that helps you locate the bird a little quicker. I would never use any clamp-on style mounting system to mount either a scope or a red dot. Most shotguns now days are drilled and tapped for scope mounts.

Dan I’ve been using an aim point micro on my turkey shotgun for years. Very effective.

I just mounted and sighted in/patterned the Vortex Crossfire...great red dot (2MOA dot size) for the price! it comes with two mounts, a low profile for shotguns and a high profile "see through" for AR's so after turkey season you can easily mount it on a AR or handgun. Vortex recommends using a thread lock on the mounting screws to make sure it stays put when mounted but it is very secure with 4 screws holding the mount and then the rail system. It is super bright when needed and also has a very low dim setting for those that use night vision on their AR's for nighttime coyotes and such. In other words, for the price it is an exceptional Red Dot...though it is only 1x (which makes it legal in other states where you cannot have any magnification on certain weapons for hunting).

I just mounted my Red Dot but haven’t patterned yet. To be honest not much magnification to it. If your needing magnification I would say go with the scope.

Been bouncing back and forth between a fixed 4 and a red dot the last few years. I've settled on the scope. Maybe it's the rifle shooter in me but I like the precision aiming of a scope even if the weapon isn't a precision tool

I put Burris Fastfire II on my Benelli a couple years ago. I love it. Never missed a Tom with out it but I love it. Put the dot on the head and boom. The best thing I like about it is you dont have to be perfectly in line with it, If the dot is on its head you are good to go
