If I felt the need for a pistol caliber carbine I would go with one of these.

https://mechtechsys.com

I've seen some video of the 10mm, and if i had a pistol in that caliber id be tempted.

Hitchcock 45 has some videos on them.

I think you have his question backward he was asking about rifle calibers in a pistol..  223 8" barrel, etc?

The OP was talking about a 10mm ar styled pistol. Most of us understand that it is the desire to a "pistol" with rifle like operation. While you cant go that short the the Mech Tech uppers their executive has a telescoping but pad that minimizes the size pretty good.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

I don't understand the appeal of rifle-caliber pistols. A 5.56 out of a 5" barrel has roughly the same kinetic energy as a 9mm out of the same length barrel.
I think the only reason would be standardization of ammo and mags. I've shot some with a 10" barrel with an arm brace that are cool.

My Sig MCX pistol is chambered in 5.56 but the barrel on it is 11.5 I don't think I'd want one any shorter in 5.56 but I wouldn't mind having a 300blk upper with a 9 inch for it.

you could make the case that a 300 black out with a short barrel and a can would be great

I like the way you think and that's exactly what I'd do.  In fact I have a Dead Air Ghost that would work/look really good screwed on the end of a 300blk 9in upper.

If I was 1 trying to set myself up for preparedness I'd have a pistol and a carbine of the same caliber. 9mm 10mm or 556. I'm not a big 556 pistol fan, BUT if I had an AR it could make sense. If I had a pistol them Mech Tech seems like the right solution. Especially if you combined it with an 80% glock lower. I'm personally not an 10mm fan but I have heard they make awesome carbine rounds...
I get the whole redundancy goal even if the caliber/ barrel length isnt optimum.

I have a 300blk pistol that I shoot suppressed and it's great, but it's WAY more expensive to shoot than my 9mm.  If you want to practice a bunch it's not really the gun you want, unless you like spending a boat load more on ammo.  Here is a pic of mine.

5.56 out of a 5" barrel is pretty extreme.

5.56 out of a 7.5" is a lot more common and you get more energy than a 357 mag. But I don't think people normally build them for practical reasons. Short ARs are just damn fun.

But Blackout is the way to go in something that small. You get a lot more energy even in a 5". In fact once you go past 10" with Blackout there are minimal gains.
