Hi Folks,
Doing a bunch of work on the guns during this shelter time. Already posted my prior project of upgrading my Marlin in 356W. Next projects are working on a couple of Remington bolt actions (700 and 722). The 722 has some nicks, scratches, etc. from years of use. So before glass bedding the action, I plan to refinish the stock exterior. It's currently a dull brown color. I'll strip the varnish, then sand it down. Not sure what the wood is, am assuming it's Beech or Birch or something similar. For stain, I'm looking at the following Minwax water based stains:
Gunstock 1151
Mahogany 1144
English Chestnut 1045 or
Walnut 1126
https://www.minwax.com/wood-products/stains-color-guide/My question: Has anybody re-finished their stocks in any of the above four stains? If so did you like how it turned out? Willing to post a photo?
After applying the stain color, I'll put on a handful of coats of oil. I'm leaning towards the Chestnut or Mahogany stain, but would like some feedback from folks prior experiences.
Thanks in advance for any inputs.
