Picture wire under the base of each antler to a single screw in hook to a stud. Can hardly notice it, which I like.
I'm with you. I dont like how far off the wall the skull hookers stick. Dont mind the angle, but not ideal either. I mount mine on plaques. For deer, a 1/4" x 4" lag works great for holding the head. Change the angle of the lag to change the angle of the head. Sometimes they don't sit just so on them so I'll wrap the end of the lag with duct tape a few times. Fixes it right up. Could also put the lag right into a stud and call it good, no plaque. Just re-read your original post. I did this same technique with my elk euro. A decent 6x. Had to use a much larger lag, but it's been up for a couple years now and 1 earthquake, no problems. No reason you couldn't leave the lower jaw if you wanted, just have to glue it in. I can check what size lag I used tomorrow if you're interested.
I use these. Used to use skull hookers but didn't like how far they stuck out.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NJ49C57?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_shareSent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
