I went out there on the last day of modern firearm last year. It was my first time out there so I spent most of my time exploring. Saw lots of sign but no deer in the clearcuts.  Lots of tweakers!

Yeah their are Elk in Capital Forest.  Mostly they stick to the Private fields.  You would probably have a better chance at shooting a Wild Hog up their as you would an elk.

I've seen elk in the Capital Forest area several times.

I know of two elk herds in the CP. Look in the extreme west and southwest parts of the area. I have seen them most often in the Porter Creek drainage.
I will hunt everywhere before I die

Been hunting with archery and modern there off and on for 40 years ... seen elk and deer off of every major line ... get out behind the locked gates and look for sign ... mountain bike works good for scouting as it is faster and pretty silent, but slow enough you won't miss the sign ... once you see fresh sign, get off the bike and scout more on foot. Biggest black tale deer (5 x 5) I ever saw was up there ... but  they have done a lot of tree cutting up there but not much brush clearing so be prepared for a lot of hand to hand combat. Realize it is also close to a major population center and therefore you get tons of traffic (road hunters, recreationists, etc).  :twocents:

I've been all over parts of the CF in the last month.... have seen lots of deer ..... so far have not seen any elk in the CF.. I have seen them on the outskirts but not in the forest.... I did find some good sign....

I am out there scouting and hiking/walking 4-7 days a week.... and most trips I see deer and hares..... mostly been seeing doe's but last night we saw a nice little buck .... and a young doe that nearly walked into my lap.....

We went down to the Mima end over the weekend I will never ever go down there again...wow too many people and horses and mountain bikes..... will stick to my neck of the woods where the most people we saw was maybe 20 on memorial day weekend.

I am wondering if any of the gates are actually closed during hunting season?  Every gate except 1 or 2 are wide open....and one area behind a gate has a bunch of no trespassing/no hunting signs with barb wire strung across the road about 1/2 mile in...that was kinda strange based on the maps that road should go back about 2 miles.

Just get out there and you will find them.....
