Anyone need/want a rooster?
« on: April 08, 2020, 01:06:41 PM »
We have a 1 year old Polish rooster. He is a very good flock defender, even though he has crazy head feathers, he still sees hawks and eagles before we do and alerts all the girls to get to cover. However, he doesn't have any manners. He will try and spur me almost every day, but will back down after a swift kick to the chin or chest, but he will not back down to the wife, and will straight up chase down our 2.5 year old boy. We have had it with him. My wife wants to take him for a car ride and drop him off in the woods, but I just can't do that. I also don't want to kill him just because he's class a jerk. SO, if you want a goofy looking, black and white polish rooster that will vigorously defend some hens then send me a PM. Or if you know where we can "donate" or surrender a rooster, let me know. Thanks guys!

have you tried grabbing him by the body and shaking him in a few circles? That has worked for me with a few nasty suckers and it only takes a time or two and they will remember not to mess with you  :chuckle:

I found going into the pen, charging at him immediately and kicking him about as far as you can only takes once or twice and they get the message. Might be tough to get your toddler to do it though. Turkeys were always easier to break than roosters for me. Had to get aggressive with some growing up but never had to go further than the running kick.

Last night me and my daughter removed our rooster from the roost, snipped the end off of his spurs and trimmed his nails. He decided to sneak attack me a few days back and actually put a small hole in my shin through my pants.
If we had small kids around he would have probably been removed that day possibly served with rice. Kids are all big enough to soccer ball him around if he causes trouble again, with Spurs trimmed he is not as scary now.  :chuckle:

You might check your local feed stores. A couple by us have a pen for free roosters. Just drop them and go. They feed and water them and they always seem to find a home somewhere. Worst case send him to freezer camp.

Kind of unusual for a Polish.   When they lock safeway down, its a meal.

Grab him by the neck and shake him in a few circles.

I have, and he minds me a little bit, but the wife won't/can't and neither can the little guy lol. I tried the humiliation method too, grabbing him by his feet hanging him upside down til he calms down and tapping his beak back and forth, and that works for like a day lol.

You might check your local feed stores. A couple by us have a pen for free roosters. Just drop them and go. They feed and water them and they always seem to find a home somewhere.

That's what I was thinking, I'm going to call a few on the way home from work today.

He was our nicest chick, then the hormones kicked in I guess, and all this spring weather has him in a mood!

Our coop isn't walk in friendly, cheapo from tractor supply. We have taught the toddler to not turn his back on him and to stand his ground, but the rooster tried spurring him in the face, wife was close, but not close enough, luckily our little man didnt get hurt.

Find the little guy a suitable stick and a metal garbage can lid  :chuckle:   Worked well for us years back with a mean rooster and younger kids.
I still eventually got rid of that rooster as he was just mean to the core, prettiest rooster I ever had but had a fighting streak that you could not break.

My kid raises rabbits. Cute, fuzzy rabbits. Every once in a while, one bites or is otherwise mean. They go to freezer camp. Don't want to pass that off on someone else. Not worth the risk.

Be sure to take wagers prior to the little guy strapping on the equipment. Good old fashion family fun

Not sure if freezer camp is the place. I would think for a tough guy rooster, the proper place would be a soothing hot spa treatment with some aromatic therapy. That should calm him down a bit.
