Best bang for the buck bow package
« on: April 12, 2020, 03:32:50 PM »
Haven’t bow hunted for 10 years.   Looking for an affordable bow package that isn’t total junk.

Thanks for any help

Pretty much all of them are good enough to hunt with now days.  Depending on your budget, you can usually get screaming good deals on high end bows as people upgrade in the early summer.

What kind of budget are you working with, that may help people with suggestions.

You can get a smok'n package for $800.  I would personally look for a used hoyt or mathews.  But really anything will work.  I will see what is on the market an update with suggestions.

Just a few used one in a quick 5 minute search.  You should figure out what your draw length is and poundage you want to pull.  I would say 60-70 lbs is great plenty....you could go as low as 50 lbs and still kill effectively though I prefer more.

If you want to go new, look at PSE, Bear, Diamond (bowtech), etc.  I have been a diehard mathews fan for the last 10 years but also like the way hoyts shoot.

Last time I was in Sportsman's they had some nice Bear bows for great prices.
God made man, Samuel Colt made them equal.

Go used, lotta guys trade out bows faster than I trade out undies, and they're good

Find you draw length and score a great package deal, especially this year!

Make sure you have an accurate idea of your DL and what draw weight your comfortable shooting.

My 2 :twocents:

If looking used become well educated on what to look for, or get input from someone who is. Make sure the cams match the data for that bow and check strings/cables for wear and if they need replaced that should factor into bow cost. Make sure the bow fits YOU and if not, what it needs to adjust the draw length. All bows are adjustable, but  some are simple mod adjustment, some need different mods, and some require cam swaps. Depending on what option it needs will help you decide if it will work for you and your budget. Beware of carbon bows.

If going new. Packages are usually a good way to get going, and often a good value, I prefer whisker biscuits on budget setups as the simplicity is what saves money, not cutting corners like some cheaper drop away, but its not a deal breaker. I don't know if your budget includes arrows and release. If not you will need to plan for those as well. DO NOT skimp on the release. Get a fully adjustable and well built release, if at all possible. The release will likely be the only item that will follow you from bow to bow consistently and will maximize your shooting ability.
