I was thinking about getting Elknuts Chuckler.  Does anyone have one?  If so what do you think of it?
you tube link to the elknut tube

A tube is a tube? I believe the reed makes the call and the user calls the elk after determining attitude.
the mouthpiece is the same as rocky's bugle and hard to chuckle with.

I have seen bulls called in with bugles that don't sound like a traditional bull sound...so go figure.

A tube is a tube?  Not on your life!  The Chuckler from Elknut is the best that I've heard, and I've been through quite a few over the years.  Abe and Sons had one that came close, but Elknut is the winner for quality, by far.

I love the little chuckler. Great sounding tube, my only complaint is that it is a noisy critter when going through the brush.  every little twigg that comes into contact with the tube u get that plastic noise.

ok hears my  :twocents:.... some people dont like the primos calls because they are simple to use.so simple alot of newcomers pick them up and head right into the woods with their terminator ripping and a constant hoochie mama squealing.this can and does work sometimes....but if eveyone is sounding the same, the elk that dont get killed  get educated and shut up.  it might just be me , but i think it takes some time to figure out reeds.in the mean time a few seasons  pass and you might be a more conservative caller. reeds are far more realistic, but if you are hunting huge private leases, the hoochie mama is great

I concure. My hunting group has a pretty stelar call set, as we have been doing for a while. That being said, we only call to make things happen in the bottom of the 9th. What OUR "A plan" is, is to spot in stalk, or listen to others raise hell with their calls and be on escape routes! We killed two bulls running from callers last yr alone! (we also killed 4 that we called in). Every voice is different.  :twocents:

Elknut's chuckler is the best bugle I have used yet.  I prefer a reed mouth call with a tube over the "all-in-one" bugles on the market.  You can do so many different things with a reed and a tube and sound a lot like an elk.  The others might be easier to use but I think you will have much better success in the long run with a reed and tube.

I'm a Primos guy myself. I rarely use the small pack terminater. The cow in estrus call has been awesome. Now I have never shot an elk I have called in a few dandies. I prefer to keep quiet though and sneek along like a ninja for some serious back country spot and stalk. Only recently have I been hunting timber co. propery on the west side and usually just sneek around quietly and wait !!!!

IMHO I think the bugle is just a piece of the whole equation. I use a berry tube and many different mouth reeds. If you can learn to use a mouth reed I think you're on your way. Practice and try as many different reeds you can. Larry Jones has some great Cd's with elk sounds and calling techniques. It's helped me alot.Spend some time in your truck or garage just figuring it out. Having different calls and making different sounds is going to be to your advantage.IT"S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE! AND for god sake quit educating all the elk out there!

I've heard some of the worst bugles coming from elk. But one thing most elk do, no mater how bad of a bugle they make is chop it off at the end of the bugle. I learned this from Larry D. Jones 22 yrs ago. Most hunters will peter it out. Hyper cow calls are good too. ;)

ive called in elk with just bout anything, and i've been calling less then a third of how long most guys have. dont matter to me, my old man still uses orignal "cow talk" and larry jones bugle and does fine :chuckle:. i've got them to respond using a straw from a refill cup or even a howler too :chuckle:. i think i will now just carry a reed or two and a tube, finally learned how to bugle with a reed. but ive been using primos for the last 2 years and done pretty good and gettin into them :dunno:

i really think it all comes down to the guy whos calling, but having one of elknuts or rockys does make you "look" good :chuckle:

The key to diaphragm calls (mouth reeds) is finding one that fits well into the roof of your mouth, between your upper molars.  Those with dental bridges and whatnot will have a tricky time.  Mastering a diaphragm calls will provide you the most versatile and adaptable calling approach with elk, not to mention turkeys and predators as well.  I use a mix of calls to keep things fresh and attempt to pique the interest of a bull looking for a certain sound.

I've spent years working and hunting with Larry D., and I can tell you that this man (Dwight Schuh as well) believes that he will get his bull each and every time he leaves camp.  His attitude and approach of calling constantly into every nook and cranny produce results most never see.  I too tend to reserve my bugling and calling until I find elk and can read the situation.  Not Larry - he calls....and calls and calls and calls.  And he calls in bulls!  One evening we met up in camp and thought neither of us drew on a bull, he'd called in five more bulls than I had.  He hunts all day and is constantly expecting to excite a bull into a response, no matter how quiet it may be on the mountain.  He never gives up.

I don't think there is a magic formula or call that will make you look like BuckLucky this fall  :chuckle: .  We can dream big but even the best tag in the state won't put you behind a behemoth rack.  Lots of guys eat precious tags every year.  Instead you need to study elk, master your calling, know when to push and when to back off, hunt all day, and be willing to try new things in order to tip the odds in your favor.

Anyone else use Deep Timber Sounds calls?

I like both the DTS Crying Hot Cow and Dominator bugle.  Cheap and simple to use.  Dominator uses a finger cot from the first aid kit instead of a proprietary reed like the blue one on my other bugle. The CHC is good for softer calling and replicates any age group in the herd but still doesn't replace my diaphragms completely.
