TP alternatives
« on: April 17, 2020, 05:16:38 PM »
In my younger days, out on hikes into the woods, I would never really plan ahead.
I don't know how many times I would suddenly have to "lay rail" in the middle of the woods.
Pine needles aren't good, but in a pinch - folded in half they sort of worked.
The best substitute for TP I was able to determine (several plant varieties attempted) was Arrow Leaf Balsam.
They're the ones that look alot like a wild sunflower.
They are at there best in early to late summer, when they have soft, fuzz like hairs growing on the leaves.
Anyone else have any "substitutions" you might offer up?
PS - don't try Stinging Nettles!

On the wetside, you can grab a handful of moss and squeeze it out.  It is like a moist sponge.

I’ve done that and it was too gritty.  Maybe I got the wrong moss?

My kid would wander back into camp sometimes minus his shirt tail.  :chuckle:

Dry oak leaves. Not very effective but scratchy.

Never tried it , but I heard that they used to use the pages from the Sears catalog.

When I was in high school, my buddy’s old man came back from a winter jog minus a glove and chuckling.

I haven’t done it but there is a case to be made for inexpensive soft gear.  There are differences in $5 gloves and $80 gloves that aren’t spoken about.

If I had $80 gloves I would probably be trying this.
