Rifle refinish done
« on: August 19, 2012, 01:30:03 PM »
Been putting this off for a while, and with hunting season so close, figured I'd better get on it.  Ever since I used Brownells Aluma-Hyde II on my son's rifle, I've been wanting to do it to mine.

Rifle is a Ruger Mark II in .338 Win Mag.  Tore the gun down, and identified which pieces we're going to get refinished, got everything sanded down, cleaned, taped up and ready to go.  Heated the metal pieces with the wifes hair dryer, and commenced to spraying down.  Metal pieces have 3 coats of black, then I hit it with the white webbing, followed by a coat of flat clear Aluma-Hyde.  Stuck all the metal in the truck cab to cure for 3 days (it was getting over 120* in there).  Stock was stripped, sanded with 400 grit (nothing was done to the ceckered areas), and then painted with 3 coats of flat brown Krylon, followed by white & black webbing.  Stuck that in the truck to cure for 3 days, and then hit it with a coat of the flat clear Aluma-Hyde.

I'm really happy with the results, and will be keeping this in the hot garage for the next week to continue any curing.  Now I just got to get the scope mounted up, get it sighted in, and should be ready.

All paint products in this refinish came out of a rattle can.  Webbing paint is Krylon Webbing, comes in a small 4 oz. can, I had to order off of e-bay, couldn't find it locally.

Well that answers my question I was going to ask. Always wondered what they used for the "Webbing" look. I've always sent my stuff off to be finished, never have done it myself. Your rifle looks good, I may have to get some supplies and try it on some take off factory synthetic stockS I have before I try it on one of my rifles.
