Early vs late season
« on: April 22, 2020, 06:51:56 PM »
Probably been covered lots but gonna ask:
How different is hunting later in May vs April?  That was my plan but if they open the season i’m still gonna go.  This is my first turkey season (maybe) and had a good lock on birds.  Heard them early n april and hope to capitalize if the season opens.   What are the tweaks you make from earlier to late spring season?

I think it is going to be a strange season when it hopefully opens up no pressure  on birds so they might act totally different.  Late May most of then hens are nesting and the boys are all in bachelor groups.  Not a lot of gobbling but you can still getbs9me interested.  This would be during a typical hunting season though.

Depends on the spring weather and where the birds are at in the breeding cycle. Late May can be tough if we had a early spring. First week of May can be good with most hens on nest.
If it flies it dies.

Birds are usually a lot more quiet, noisy on the roost and then quite for the rest of the day. Pretty well  split up so you don't see as many big groups out in the fields. Trees and brush are much more leafed out so they can be harder to see and can disappear easier. Tom's I've called in in May seem like they come in much more quietly.  Weather is warmer and daylight comes much earlier than I sometimes want to get out of bed for. Usually there are virtually no other hunters, but if it opens late that could change. Ticks are very active in that warmer may weather and usually the snakes are out and about.
