Went out for first hunt
« on: May 09, 2020, 10:03:44 AM »
Went out Wed. Morning to an area i always have heard/seen turkeys.  Heard them pre-dawn early in April.  Made some calls at the truck around 4:45 ish and headed to sit at the edge of the woods looking out onto the field.  1 or two other blinds in the area but seemed to be unused.  Around 6:15 a crew slowly walked the road nearby cutting and limbing the recent logging area.  Put up with that for about an hour and decided to drive the old roads and get out and call every so often.  Saw one tom heading off the road 30 yrds ahead.  Fot out and tried to sneak in and call him.  No luck so I Headed up the other side of the road and heard a gobble.  I tried to quietly find a place to hunker and begin calling but never heard or saw another.
I was surprised they were all up in such thick timber and none down in the field.  It was recently logged pretty well nearby so i suspect there may be a lot of bugs turned up so being up there may have a better food source and protected roosting.

Glad you were seeing them!  Just a matter of time until you call one in! Good luck on your next trip out.
