We went over to North Idaho yesterday and hiked around some of our morel spots- and they did not disappoint!  They are popping up everywhere.  We got a few black morels (I think Morchella conica), but mostly tan morels(M. esculenta)  Also picked a nice Ramaria formosa coral fungus, good for Asian stir fry recipes.  Got some arnica and yerbabuena for medicinal use, too.

Saw a cow elk on the drive in- there's a spot where several cows calve every year- fortunately not close to where we were hiking, so as not to disturb them this time of year.

I hope you all are having a good spring season.

Central WA too.  We found 2 different cluster areas that produced 20+ bigguns. Got a spot we will hit next weekend that has the possibility of putting out 12+ inchers.

Went trespassing on another forum members property today and found quite a few growing.  Smallish, but nice and fresh, good shape.

Anyone have a gauge on the decline in morel production on the second year after a burn? I have only really had success the first year after a burn. The next year I either blank or get a couple.

Last year I filled a 5 gallon bucket with 6 to 10 inch morels in the Mcleod fire north of Mazama. This year went to the same area and came away with two dozen shrimps (size could be timing).

There are morels in Mazama? I haven't looked a lot but never found them up there but I was in 231 and not 218 (sounds like you were in 218 unit)

As to your question, the burn areas confuse me. This past weekend my friend and I realized we were in an old burn area. But judging by the heavily fading evidence of the burn, we determined the burn was probably at least three years ago but need to investigate further. If it was at least that old, it did not effect production too much far as I can tell. Found about a pound in 20 minutes.

They'll usually pop well for 2-3 years and then decline. I know pickers who go to the same spots for years after the burn.

I have had the same experience with burn areas. 1st year is awesome, but following years those same areas are no better producing than unburned ground.

As far as size, I will never figure that out. Marked 2 different ones this year, 1 week later #1 doubled in size, #2 no change. Another area that produces average sized yearly....this year they were the size of pop cans.....opposite of what you'd think with a dry spring.  :dunno:
