Hello All!
I am trying to find info. on where I can hunt Rios west of Spokane. I looked at the fish and game map and I see the shaded region but it doesn't show if there is any public land there. I need a Rio to finish my slam before I transfer this summer (Navy). I greatly appreciate anyone's help.

Try north of Reardan...Along the long lake..Avista I beleive has some lando open for hunting...other thatn that get a WADNR map. Also if you go time the SE corner of the state also has RIOs...Tucannon, etc..

If it's the land I'm thinking of, you need permission to hunt the Avista land.

Spokane slyer is right Hunting by written permission..is needed..the phone number should be on signs go north of reardan and take right on devils gap rd...They are good about giving out permission..of course after everything that AVISTA has done powerbill wise they may want an arm and a leg..

I just called. It does not cost anything, but they are out of permits for turkey season. The phone number for the guy that issues them is 495-8612. I'll be checking back for deer season.

The county down along the Palouse River, south of St. Johns and areas north/northwest of Pine City toward Sprague have some Rio's running around.

Just trying to help out a fellow board member.....still a lot of leg work to do....permission, maps , scouting etc. Not really honey holes as there is alot of country out there. Personally...if I needed a Rio to finish a slam, I either go to the Blues or Lincoln county....Blues lot more public access on Forest Service etc. Since he asked about areas near Spokane....I mentioned these...... other folks mentioned different areas..

There are two state pieces that I know of west of Spokane that hold some rios, PM me and I will give you directions.

Any bird south of the Spokane river is classed as a Rio! just as any bird north is a Merriam's but you will find that there are Rios north and then we also has a crossbred perhaps they are Mario's . When the game department imported turkeys into the state they didn't realize they also are migratory to a point and follow the snow line. You have all 3 species around hunter's. Several years ago I was hunting the avista land on the south side of the Spokane river and had a Tom in a tree on the north side of the river. He pitched out and flew across so he was a Merriam's to the middle and then he became a Rio. He did have the misfortune of landing short and therefore also became a duck! Turkeys are classed here by geographical boundaries.

Being migratory as you incorrectly use the term, had nothing to do with releases made by WDFW. The overlap that occurs between two subspecies in the areas in Spokane, Stevens, and Lincoln counties had everything to do with establishing turkeys in as many areas as possible for opportunity, rather than avoiding some hyberization in areas where they would eventually overlap.

Sorry...incorrect, unless you mean subspecies.....Merriams, Rios and a hybrid. Thats possible from overlap from Lincoln and across the river from the Reservation over time. If however you mean Merriams, Rio's and Easterns you are wrong. If they are any easterns there, they are a few game farm stock released by someone.

Using the term "Migratory" may have not been the best choice. Perhaps "congregation in winter flocks" should have been a better choice. Have places that are full of birds in the winter and after the snow leaves hard to find a bird.

If there are Easterns around Hunters... they weren't released by the WDFW or did they migrate from the westside...These releases are done by hunters who raise birds and release them..usually game farm stock and usually not disease free..

THis isn't good for wild stocks which were disease tested by WDFW before release.

Also remember the wild turkey is adaptable to different habitats and can exist in different areas within the state..In some cases populations overlap and hybridize... THat said WDFW released birds within areas that met habitat requirements for certain species..Most of the Rio Grande Turkeys came from Texas and were trapped and released within the state by WDFW and released in designated areas (i.e. Lincoln County) Merriams came from South Dakota and another state I believe.. and were released in Hunters as one location and I believe the Klickitat also originally in the 1960's..populations of Merriams in Republic and North Central washington came from trap/transfer operations within the Merriams area (Primarily NE Washington)..

The line you mention was identified for the Washington Slam purposes and in my opinion designates that a high percentage of wild turkeys within these areas are Merriam strain or Rio Grande Strain..

Now even within a Merriam or Rio Grande subspecies there are genetic traits that cause different fan configurations and colorations.
