Addison's Disease
« on: May 01, 2020, 03:52:23 PM »
Our 4 year old female Boykin appears to have Addison's Disease.  We are waiting for confirmation from a blood test.  Anyone have any history or information that can help?  It is a disease that affects the adrenal glads and inhibit the production of cortisol.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Our cocker/cavalier spaniel has had Addisons for a few years now. We give him some medicine called Prednisone every morning and a shot of a medicine called Zycortal Suspensionlike every 25 days and he is good to go.

We have a 7yo German Shorthaired Pointer who has had Addison’s for going on 3.5 years now. As ridgefire said. A steady dose of prednisone and regular zycortal injections control it very well. Our dog has negative side effects from the prednisone, so we have pretty much eliminated it except here and there when she appears to be stressed. We tried the oral medication at first instead of the zycortal injections because it was cheaper, but it didn’t take long for that drug to stop working orally and eventually we switched to the injections. I would suggests going with the injections right away. In the long run you don’t save much money and the oral medication had some side effects. I started a thread on here back when our dog was diagnosed. I will dig up a link because I had some info in there. Good luck and stay positive. With proper care your dog should live a pretty normal life.
