What Do YOU Do With a Flopping Turkey?

I figured it would be fun to see how everyone handles themselves after a successful harvest. I myself prefer to step on their head.

I hate to shoot them again when they flop around but a few years ago I shot one that flopped for a few seconds and stopped. I was still approaching it when it started flopping again. Not wanting to put anymore pellets into the bird I let it flop. Pretty soon it was flopping like crazy and starting to drop down into a canyon. A few seconds later it was doing cartwheels down the hill and gaining speed It flopped until it was completely down the hill at the bottom where it expired. It was a large and steep hillside that I now had to navigate down to the turkey. About 90 minutes later I was back up to the crest of the hill soaking wet from sweat. I am no youngster and the next turkey that flops will get plugged again before it takes me on another wild recovery.

Grab their feet and let them hang. The wings beat on your legs but do nothing. It keeps the feathers from getting trashed.

Get knife out, find camera if applicable, take a deep breath.  Should be pretty much still now if the shot was decent

Shot one from a tree stand on edge of an open field.  It was flopping around, but since it was out in the open on flat ground I wasn't in a hurry to climb down and get it.     Within 30 seconds a golden eagle dive bombed it, freaking scared me to death how loud the eagle was as it was diving down.   It put out its talons, opened its wings, and veered off at the last second.

One of the coolest things I've seen....

I was told by a taxidermist, not to step on their head if you wanted to have them mounted .
He said push down on them to squeeze out the air. :dunno:

I grab by the head and swing the body in a circle breaking the neck. It seems to work and they usually quit flapping  :dunno I have been doing that for probably 25 years or since we started hunting turkey in Idaho.

Not too long ago a guy walked up to his bird after he shot it and set his gun down next to it, it did the flop and hit the trigger on his gun and blew his foot apart! So the turkey got the last laugh on that one!

I just wait it out. I picked one up and got spurred pretty good, so they can just flop while I get out my tag.

I like to get them off the ground as fast as I can so they don't bust up the feather more than necessary. So its grab them by the feet for me and let them flap until dead. If they need a neck ringing, they get one.

:yeah: Grab their legs at same time so they don't spur you. Then fold his neck so no air way and place your knee in their chest so they can't breathe, instant No Flop :)
