Latest date you called in a turkey?
« on: May 04, 2020, 08:56:35 AM »
What’s the latest date in May you have either called in a turkey or been able to hear them gobble to locate them? Will be taking my son out the 14th-16th to try and find him his first turkey.

I've heard them gobble into June.  Don't worry, you guys will be out there in prime time!
God made man, Samuel Colt made them equal.

Turkeys on my property are gobbling and chasing right now.  Last week appeared to be amazing......with the last 2-4 days the groups are smaller and some of the toms are running in groups of 4-5.  I need them to stay at it for another week so the kids can lay the smack down on a couple long beards.     Relatively new to turkey hunting myself so we will see how it plays out.

I've called in and killed birds the last day of the season. This is my favorite time to hunt personally. Lots of hens are tending to clutches so anytime after 9ish in the morning they are moving to their nests and leaving Tom's lonely and looking for love.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

Exactly. I usually wait till mid-May to hunt every year. Called in an angry tom that thrashed my decoy on May 22nd in 2015, and called in and shot two gobblers in a three-hour stretch on the afternoon of May 21st in 2018. Later is better, IMO. Like Karl said, especially mid-morning and afternoon.

I’m not sure what the latest day in May I have hunted has been but that’s when I have called in turkeys. It’s also my opinion late May is better. But hotter.

My favorite time of the year to hunt is May. I hardly ever Hunt April anymore. The majority of all the birds I have shot are in May. The latest I have heard a bird gobble was Elk season late October to November.

I think I can say that I have never called a turkey for a date. Mostly cheerleaders types! 😁  Sorry! But seriously, you can call time and hens any time of the year. Many use what is called the "kee kee run", it is used to bring flicks back together generally in the fall, but I have used it for practice all year long. Just to see how many birds are in each area I travel.
