Anyone deer hunt in 67 owyhee oregon
« on: May 06, 2020, 08:58:41 PM »
I'm right on the edge of a tag for this unit. I have been putting some thought into burning some points to hunt it this year if I get lucky or next year for sure. I see what the stats say but I would love to hear some feedback if anyone has any experience. Feel free to send me a pm or post in here.
Would be a rifle tag.

I've had good luck getting information about that general area from members on rokslide.

Hope to hunt that area myself depending on how many years I stick around in that area with my new job.

Hunted it last year with my sons and father in law to burn points. It was tough. We mainly saw small bucks like spikes and forkies. I wouldn’t go there until the herd recovers.

Did you use a boat to access the vast majority of it ?

I drive the border of Owyhee and Whitehorse units 4 evenings/nights a week. I’ve seen some big bucks in Jordan Valley and out on the highway in the headlights. I think the population is actually bouncing back a little compared to this time last year

Thanks guys. Always like to hear that kind of first hand info. I have been reading and a lot of the guys that hunted it last couple years said they were not great deer numbers. Still a few solid bucks but not the norm. This years moisture is looking great for most of Oregon so thinking there should be some good horn growth for critters. I have 5 points for deer so being selective on burning them. Yet still a few years probably from my elk tag I hoping to get so I still am buying a license and can keep building points. I have enough for most hunt more then enough so Kinda stuck in the middle with to many points or not enough for the majority.

Keep applying and keep building pts while you wait for your elk tag.  The Owyhee unit has always interested me.

I’m in the same boat here, 6 deer points so I could draw Owyhee but one behind Beattys Butte, really not sure what to drop them on

Here's my advice for anyone that has pts in OR.  Burn then on anything you can draw now and stop applying.  Terrible odds and terrible quality.

After I burn my lope deer and elk. I won’t do points again only general hunts if I want to play in Oregon after these hunts. Much better states to be putting more focus and $ into.

My dad burned a bunch of points on it last year going in with two locals to help them get tags.  He hunted about 7-10 days and didn't see anything of size, but one of the other guys got a nice buck, upper 170's. That same guy has been doing some shed hunting and finds some pretty high quality sheds. He tells me I should apply for that unit once I start rebuilding points (I'm currently sitting at 21 with no idea what to do with them lol) because it can be a sleeper.

Awesome info I am not looking for huge. Just a solid buck will always work for me. Nice to know the big ones are around but if I can get a solid 150/160 buck that will be just fine by me. I talked with the bio and got a bunch of good info. Seemed like a strait up guy. The moisture this year is way high for a lot of areas and horn growth should be killer this year. I have about 30% chance this year so I tossed my name in that hat so we shall see.

I don’t believe the moisture for that area is way high, again I drive through there 4 nights a week, never chained once this past winter, and barely any rain this spring.

Find the remote chukar areas of the unit and youll find some good bucks.  I know some guys who chukar hunt it every year on the opener and they always kick up a good buck or two.
