Bowhunting turkeys - need help!
« on: May 11, 2020, 06:27:20 AM »
Any tricks to hunting birds with bows?  I've got a blind,  but before resorting to that,  any tricks to be able to draw and shoot?  I screwed up twice yesterday :(  But,  did get to watch a Tom and hen fully rub it in with a porn show in front of me at 47 yards.   I never realized that the hens initiate some of it.

I got all wa birds with a bow, and it wasn't easy. I found that the blind for the most part did not work for archery. Instead mobility, and stealth mode was good. Keeping brush trees or rocks between me and them, so I had a place to draw from behind works well. When I used decoys, I made sure I used either a hen in the mating posted (which got him to strut, draw as he is facing away ) or have a jake decoy near the hen, so when he is busy mauling the name decoy, you can draw. Hey good luck! Oh and it is always the flirty hen that says ok, or he ain't getting nuttin! 😁 Sounds like a human thing doesn't it?

When I hunted with a bow, decoys worked best. Gave the bird something to focus on besides me.

If you're not using a blind, a tactic I have used with success is to actually put your back to the bird. Have a big tree or a solid wall of brush behind you and have your decoy in front of you. This way as the turkey approaches from behind you to go check out the decoy they have to walk right past you. Hopefully you are concealed enough from behind to allow you to draw your bow. I had success with my long bow using this tactic. He saw me draw and perked his head up but it was too late!
