Modern Firearm - Hunters 65 and over question
« on: May 18, 2020, 09:11:37 AM »
The regs have, in the general season section, youth, hunters 65 and over, and disabled seasons listed. Those seasons require no special permit, correct? Then, in addition, there are special permits available for youth, hunters 65 and over, and disabled... correct?

Reason I ask is it seems odd that hunters 65 and over can shoot an antlerless whitetail in 154, but there is also a special hunt listed for that GMU for hunters 65 and over to shoot... antlerless deer. Why a special permit if they're allowed to shoot antlerless in general season?  :dunno:

No permit needed, just a OTC tag if you meet the age requirements

Looks like the difference is the permit also includes GMU 163 and 181, and the other difference is the permit is good for any antlerless deer (mule deer and whitetail) while the general season is only for whitetail.

I've hunted down there and it can be hard finding whitetails sometimes, and mule deer will be everywhere. So it would definitely be better to have that permit if you want meat in the freezer.

No sir, you read it right. My dad lives in 154 and hunts out the back door. He usually doesn't have trouble filling his tag, but i saw there was the special hunt for 65+ and I got confused as to why he'd need a special permit for something he can do with a OTC tag. bobcat got me straightened out!

The area the ol' man lives is almost exclusively whitetail now. Used to see mule deer pretty often, and still do if you go another 2 miles up the road, but with his general season tag working for a whitetail antlerless, he's golden.

154 is a decent place to take WT does, lots of triplets last year and no recent EHD issues
