WA Trapper Education Exam Now ONLINE!

Hey all, just wanted to share that the Trapper Education test is now online, so you don't have to sign up to take the exam in person.  If you've ever been interested in trapping, but have decided not to due to the testing requirement, this might be a good time for you to get it done.  The trapper education booklet is about an hour read and the test is only 45 questions.  It should be pretty easy to pass if you read the pamphlet first. 

I'm excited to give it a shot!  The test/certification is free, the license is obviously not and needs to be acquired every year.

It took a few hours for it to get sent to your email. I think the guy has to manually send it.

86.5.  I read through the manual a year or two ago, but so much of it is about types of trapping i dont intend to do, i just kind of round filed the info.  All i want to trap at first is bobcats, though i may do a bit of beaver trapping at some point.  And i dont even know where or how to go about it, but id love to get just one prime winter badger.  Ever since seeing one down by dayton while deer hunting as a kid ive really wanted one.

I should have no problem getting some bobcats right on my property, but one thing that worries me is that im kind of running a skunk farm here.  Whats the best course of action if i walk up on a trap and a big ol stinker is in there?

Ya I been reading the manual for a few years and intended to take the test about 7 years ago and never got around to it.
So I will admit a few things changed about types of traps ECT.I took the test about 2 this afternoon and still waiting for email ,then rushed through the test again an hour later when I got no email .
Took a screen shot of test results cause I was worried they didn't get it .Got the same score both times cause the second time I just went through and picked all the same answers as the first time so I could check and make sure I put my email in correct.

A friend of mine just took it and passed,He filled out all the information for name address and birth date PRESSED SUBMIT.Is that it?Now after Monday he will get a certificate then he can get trappers license in the fall?

Yeah, they have to manually review your score and then send you the cert, which I believe does not expire.

There were some questions that weren't directly covered in the manual.  Somehow I got them all!  100% here!  I did NOT think that was going to happen.

I'm really excited about trying this now.  COVID training for the win!

I don't believe any State accepts a trapper certification from another State. Not hard to understand when the laws from State to State vary so much.

I will just add that it is very nice having the convenience of the on-line course but about all new trappers would benefit from attending the class. We spend about half the class on how to trap and handle fur, something you don't get on-line.

Took mine yesterday and the page froze up and said error after I clicked done and I never got an email but I just logged into my wdfw account and it will now allow me to purchase a trappers license so I assume i passed .

Make sure to support your trappers association and become a member.  Im glad to see an easy way to get your trapping license but i hope people also take it serious and get involved.  Remember just because you can trap a certain way doesnt mean you should.  Good luck trapping everyone! I still have my last WA license from when we could use all types of traps, not sure if that allows me to buy a WA license again or not, but I'm more interested in trapping wolves in Idaho anyway. That requires the wolf class and I think a regular trapping class too? I'll double check with IDFG if I have time to follow through with doing it. My son has been dabbling, he caught his first wolf this winter, I would sure like to help eliminate a few more.

I dont think there is such thing as an easy tan. After all the work of catching one, skinning it and putting it up, you should probably send it to somewhere like Moyles. There would probably be a good amount of trial and error doing it yourself and if its “easy” than it probably isnt going to be a very good tan.

If you have ever had a trapping license or passed the trapping class in WA you are good to go. No proof need be presented, WDFW archives those records.
I believe the same applies in ID. They haven't required a trapper education class for long so if you had a license before the class was required you are grandfathered in. Wolf trapping class is needed though if you wish to trap wolves.

i would highly recommend just sending to moyles. I tried the self tan last year just to see the whole process. Feel like I wasted two furs. Cool experience but for cost and quality, send it out. You’ll be much much happier

Just took the test and passed tonight. I think the class would have helped me get a better score. I’m sure the class will help me be a better trapper. Probably going to sign up for a class when they open back up.

its awesome they have the set up online, but i would strongly encourage you guys that are thinking about actively getting into trapping to take an actual class. youve already got the license, but the amount of knowledge you can glean in the class setting is invaluable. it will greatly expedite your learning curve.

Yes if you want to trap in Idaho anything including wolves you need to take both classes.  Here is the problem, as of right now there are NO CLASSES for either class and they are not sure if any will be put on this year becaise of the Virus stuff.  Keep checking back on their website for any update.

 Click on the link, towards the top of the page there is a covid notice in a yellow box. at the end of that statement there is a link to click on to get to the test.
