Blue Mtns. Foothills west.
« on: June 11, 2020, 02:09:04 PM »
Cashed in 11 points on the blue mtns west tag this year.  Season start date kinda sucks starting on a Monday.  Is it better to go on the opener or wait until the 2nd week?

Pulled the same tag. Hoping to harvest my first whitetail. Planning on some trips over this summer to look around. Will probably spend the last 7 days or so hunting it.

Not sure how much time off I'll left for this hunt but I'll give it whatever I have left.   I also have Montana deer and elk tags to fill.

Watch the weather as your season gets close...if a significant cold front hits, I would use whatever flexibility you have to hunt if/when such a weather pattern develops.  While the rutting/movement picks up across the season, weather can be a very big factor.  Its usually still mild for most of that hunt, but every once in a while you get a couple days in the teens and you'll see an enormous increase in deer activity/visibility.

Don't worry about it. I'm going to kill your buck during the general season. :)

Just kidding. Congrats on pulling the tag.

Had the tag last year and our group went 4 out of 4. You guys will have no problem finding bucks. From what we saw there is a large population smaller basket rack 3 and four points. But we did see some absolute giants mostly on private property. Just pray that you don't get fog because it can get really darn bad visibility over in that country. Take a week of vacation if you got it and lay off the trigger and enjoy the hunt! Good luck

After trying for ten years, I drew the same tag!  Ive never killed a whitetail so I'm super pumped!!!  I had planned on taking the 11th through 17th off but I'm second guessing those dates after reading this.

We went later around those dates and had no problem finding and killing buck. You should be good to go.

Took my buck second to the last day 4 years ago.We hunted the last full week. A buddy couldn’t lay off a little basket racked buck. Be patient and you should be able to muster up a good deer.

Y'all getting these bucks on public or getting access to private? My cousin has a tag this year and it seems there is not a ton of public?

i got mine on private. The biggest buck I saw during my hunt was on public. Just couldn’t make it happen.

Plenty of public land to hunt. Just gotta like the feel of burning leg muscles.

Not a doubt in my mind you will find a buck. We saw 4-5 a day maybe more. Lots of mule deer. Most of the whitetail bucks are basket bucks. The bigger ones are often on private land. There are does all over the place so the bucks have to come off of private. Deer were moving all day so hunt hard at the golden hours but don’t give up midday.
