Mudflow access

Howdy all hope some good permits got drawn and now the pre season work can truly begin 

Father/brother in law and I drew archery elk tags in mudflow. We normally hunt the other side of St. Helens in Lewis river. Heading out to check out the elk area tomorrow. Looks like no WH permits left if I was looking at the WH site correctly. Any help with where we can access the area would be appreciated.

We have archery hunted 2 years with no luck on the final second but we have called in several bulls (shout out to ElkNut) and two of us let an arrow fly without finding its mark. So I think we are close to sealing the deal.  Are there any places conducive to calling in mudflow?

Also for those experienced...since we have been successful calling in elk in a public unit with either sex avail, are we sacrificing by going to antlerless only in the elk area? Or will lack of pressure and elk numbers make it worthwhile to get the meat in the freezer? Just looking for

You can park at the yellow gate off of the hiway and hike down. Its not far. maybe a mile Think the road is the 3000 line. But could be 3100. Its just a little ways past the Eco park. You can camp there if you need to.

I would look into a Weyerhaeuser walk in permit if they are still available. Otherwise I believe the access from spirit lake highway is all Weyco land. You can access it from the state land up the 4250 but it will be harder access. Get OnX and check out your units boundaries. Should be a good hunt.

Check to make sure you need the Weyco access. But there are 133 permits left.

You can access the unit from the S side of the river without needing a pass. You should be able to see the corridor road on the map they send you. Good luck!

You can access on the highway side from the 3100. Its 1.75 miles down hill to the bottom.  Had a modern firearm tag last year and there were a dozen and a half or more bulls down in the flow on opening day. Lots of elk on the south side if you head up towards castle lake. Exciting hunt. Hope to draw it at least once more in my lifetime. Congratulations and good luck.

Wish I would have read this thread again  Ended up getting the weyco pass. I might only use it if I really have to access the Northside  but it’s ok it was only $75 and lasts a year so I’ll find other uses.

Took a trip down yesterday, pass appears to get me access from the north or far southwest-just the corner of the area. Traveled the 4250 to 3000 line to the end, ran into several tag holders, many youth which was nice to see. Lots of access from the 3000 line it seems, and timbered. mostly state land, can I camp here? Hunting within the area would be a huge time saver and benefit since I could take off right from camp I imagine I will spend my time here since my main game is calling. Only worry is a ton of bulls will come in and make it difficult to arrow a cow. But good problem to have. I have the whole week, I’m just excited to finish the job and finally get elk in my freezer again

Also I heard someone mention an off trail pass? This is for pumice plains only though correct? And hunter orange for an archer and helpers but not hikers?? What??

There is a off trail pass. They will send it to you a couple weeks before your hunt. Allows you and 3 people to be there. As far as camping,  I know a few hunters that have camped on the south side if that's where your focus will be. With an archery tag, may be dependent upon fire danger.

The weyerhaeuser pass will allow you to hunt the timber and road down to the mudflow off the 3100. Doesn't make sense to have vehicle pass, as its all hoofing it around.
