Umtanum sheep tag
« on: June 13, 2020, 12:37:34 PM »
I was one of the fortunate 3 to draw the Umtanum sheep tag this year.  Any advice from previous tag holders (or anyone familiar with the unit) would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Drive the canyon and stop at pullouts and glass across the river.

lots of sheep over there, you can see them most any day from the canyon highway.not sure how people get over to that side of the river since you're not allowed to cross the R.R Tracks but good luck to you with a great tag.You can always come in from the LT. side and hike in.That's what i will do if i ever draw.

i use a raft to go over the river but that wont get you by the cliffs on the other side of the R.R Tracks  crossing the R.R tracks is trespassing.

I've been walking on, across, over, under RR tracks since I was a kid. Only once have I had a GW till me its not cool. Hell when I was a youngster living on the Wetside I'd jump on the train and ride it to Snohomish to shoot ducks, good times!!

I can say I have jumped and rode the train a few times when I was younger but wouldn't do it not. The railroad has security guys that patrol the popular areas. I don't know if that crossing is one but I know they have security cams on some areas now too. It is a federal offense but I have yet to get caught or warned. :twocents:

You can cross at Umtanum creek.... if you want to go 100% legal

There is literally a bridge across the river to walk across and everything

I wasn't aware it was a federal offense.... we cast an blast along that river all the time

Guess you could always come in from the west too

Talk to the bios at the Yakima office, if you want a mature ram the best place to hunt is not the canyon. They’ll get you pointed in the right direction

:yeah: big boys will all be on the river. May not see them scouting but by the time the hunt starts they will be there. Glass every ram in the canyon and then circle back and shoot the biggest.

Exactly!  Helped on this hunt a few years back. Get a really light boat or raft to cross the river.

Not sure why anyone would say its not a great spot for ram  :chuckle:

If you have drawn that area,There is no better place,In the whole unit.

If you watch the big flat the tracks are on the other side of it,The sheep graze in that flat often.I see them almost every day there every season.

When my dad had the tag and we hunted it the rams were all hanging up on umptanum ridge at the opener. My dad killed a 173” ram on the opener and we were probably 10+ miles from the river. Unless they’ve completely switched patterns in the last 10 yrs or so, most guys who were hunting the canyon shot rams but they were dinks compared to my dads ram and about 8 others out of the band my dad took his ram from.

That's a heck of a ram for your dad or anybody for that matter👍Things have definitely changed over the years. I'd recommend covering all of the unit scouting, because that's the funnest part of all these sheep hunts. Definitely want to focus on all nooks and crannies in the canyon come season though.

I drew the Umtanum Big Horn Sheep tag for this hunting season 2022. Im 17 years old and yet somehow managed to draw this tag. I dont know much about the animals over there so Im looking for advice from people who have hunted it in the past or who know a bit about the area, any info will help tremendously. Thanks

When was that photo taken?  I'm real curious what is in there this year after last season.  I haven't been over yet to take a look, but plan to spend some time over there looking at sheep.  They are such cool animals.
