High alpine buck behavior
« on: May 18, 2020, 07:54:27 PM »
Do they like to sleep on south facing slopes, north facing slopes in the summer? What’s their favorite summer food. Any other habits you can think of. It’s almost time for me to head up and start looking around. And place a couple cameras

When I'm up that high during the day, I tend to see them bedded in the shade oftentimes on mountain sides that are shady most of the time but I don't sped a lot of time alpine hunting. I think the slopes with more shade tend to have thicker forage/cover for them as well. Best of luck!

They’re in the open in the summer a lot more so than when they go hard horned.  Once they shed their velvet they vanish into the dark timber never to be seen again. I found it very easy to find deer in the cascades in August and next to impossible to find them later on in the year.

Is there a altitude and time when they have lost the velvet? Lower altitude first and what time

Every alpine buck I've killed has been hard horned by Sept 15th.

Could be the area I frequent. But mid Sept is typical for hard horned deer.

I would head up a couple times this summer and hike in from multiple locations. See which you prefer.
