When are you going to MT for your deer hunt?
« on: June 14, 2020, 03:06:10 PM »
Hey guys,
Just curious what week y’all are heading out for your Montana deer hunts this fall? I went the week before thanksgiving last year and had a blast. I was lucky enough to get drawn again this year and just trying to figure out what week to go.. i was considering the first week of Nov this year, but still not sure. How about y’all, when are you guys headed over this year?

My ideal week would be the week before or the week of Thanksgiving. But for some reason the other guys don’t want their families mad at them for skipping Thanksgiving so we never do that. The last time we went the week before and it was awesome. Due to one person driving a quality deer tag here it looks like will be going for the first week of November this year. I sure hope the snow and cold weather has set in. I’d much rather be froze to the bone then be dealing with the gumbo

I don't have any vacation time so I'll be weekend hunting MT this year. I'll go for the opener and possibly the following weekend and then the long 4 day Thanksgiving weekend. Not ideal but better than sitting at home watching people post pics of MT bucks  :chuckle:

that's the money slot! Rut switch flips on the 8th. If I could block out any time to go it would be 8th through the 16th

I'll be heading over on November 13th.  I think the 14th or 15 or maybe it's the 16th is no moon.

My brother and his buddies are twisting my arm for an opening week mule deer where I grew up, I'll probably end up doing that.  I have a great chance at drawing an antelope tag in a different part of the state so I may be going back to hunt that plus a whitey doe second tag in November.

I'm looking at two week long trips, probably fly the first one and put it in the freezer and pick it up during the second trip I drive over for.

My hunting partner, who shall remain nameless unless he chooses to self-identify and explain his actions to the forum, thought it would be a good idea to plan a family vacation to Hawaii in the middle of the mule deer rut. So we will be hunting the opening week. Although it’s not as much fun as November I’ve still killed plenty of deer in the opening week so not too worried about it. Unless the State of Hawaii decides they don’t want his money then the game may change.

The week before thanksgiving this year. We've gone every week besides the very last week, never had a problem finding deer and honestly the first week has been really good to us in the past with a little more deer to choose from it seems, especially when hunting BMA's. I know everyone likes to hunt them in the rut but we haven't always found it necessary

are most of you guys talking mule deer timing? My response was for whitetails though I would probably still stick with week before or week of thanksgiving depending on the year

I'd say pretty much everyone is talking MD. I could be wrong though

That is what I am assuming as well. There are both wt and md where we go but more wt and the rut seems to be going strong for both

Wow, those tire tracks really hurt when they come from your hunting partner :)
For the record here is how I remember the conversation:
Myself:  Late last year - "Family is really putting pressure to go to Hawaii in next November"
CaNINE:  That's fine, my dad will also be applying and doesn't like cold weather so we will probably go early.
Myself:  Are you sure?
CaNINE:  I'm sure.
Myself:  Hawaii trip booked
CaNINE:  When the deadline for applying was upon us. -  "My Dad decided not to apply this year.  If we draw, can you go in November?"
Myself:  Ummm.  Tickets to Hawaii already booked
CaNINE:  Ok.  We can still have a good October hunt.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  :)

Most of the deer are resident deer they will there early and rut in the later season. Our favorite time is from the 15th until the 22nd then head home for turkey.
