My hunting partner, who shall remain nameless unless he chooses to self-identify and explain his actions to the forum, thought it would be a good idea to plan a family vacation to Hawaii in the middle of the mule deer rut. So we will be hunting the opening week. Although it’s not as much fun as November I’ve still killed plenty of deer in the opening week so not too worried about it. Unless the State of Hawaii decides they don’t want his money then the game may change.
The lazy do not roast any game, but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt.

No longer nameless

The week before thanksgiving this year. We've gone every week besides the very last week, never had a problem finding deer and honestly the first week has been really good to us in the past with a little more deer to choose from it seems, especially when hunting BMA's. I know everyone likes to hunt them in the rut but we haven't always found it necessary

:yeah: the guys I know that consistently take big deer in MT swear by the first week.

are most of you guys talking mule deer timing? My response was for whitetails though I would probably still stick with week before or week of thanksgiving depending on the year

I'd say pretty much everyone is talking MD. I could be wrong though

That is what I am assuming as well. There are both wt and md where we go but more wt and the rut seems to be going strong for both

Wow, those tire tracks really hurt when they come from your hunting partner :)
For the record here is how I remember the conversation:
Myself:  Late last year - "Family is really putting pressure to go to Hawaii in next November"
CaNINE:  That's fine, my dad will also be applying and doesn't like cold weather so we will probably go early.
Myself:  Are you sure?
CaNINE:  I'm sure.
Myself:  Hawaii trip booked
CaNINE:  When the deadline for applying was upon us. -  "My Dad decided not to apply this year.  If we draw, can you go in November?"
Myself:  Ummm.  Tickets to Hawaii already booked
CaNINE:  Ok.  We can still have a good October hunt.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  :)

Well that takes all the fun out my version of the story.

Most of the deer are resident deer they will there early and rut in the later season. Our favorite time is from the 15th until the 22nd then head home for turkey.
