carry/hunting pistol
« on: June 15, 2020, 12:15:15 PM »
so ive been packing an older taurus 24/7 40 cal for the last 15 years with me everytime i step into the woods. thinking about swapping it out and maybe something a little different. the taurus has an external safety which i would like to work out of. im thinking of a glock full size in 10mm with just the trigger and heel safeties. no hammer. any recommendations or opinions and why.  open to other brand options, just not well versed in them all. thanks for the replies.

this will be carried in a chest holster and want fast access, point and shoot. im open to other calibers

In 10mm, the G20 Glock is a pretty good choice.  The G40 would be another option, but it's about 1.5 inches longer.

I’d say for the self defense option i would lean towards the G20. Nothing wrong with the G40 or any of the others mentioned but the longer barrel only serves for hunting ranges imo. I carried a g20 concealed for years and really came to appreciate it.

Have a Springfield TRP longslide with Trijicon red dot - super accurate, but big for all around, everyday carry.
Also shooting a Glock 40 with Leupold Delta red dot, KKM barrel, trigger job- very accurate but still to big.... but buying another to have :-)
Going to purchase a Glock 20SF, no red dot and see how it works.... obviously I like 10mm...

I have a PMR 30 and do not trust it in a life or death situation.  Mine has had a catastrophic failure and blew the side of the slide out.  It is a fairly common problem that I found out researching after it happened to me.  They did fix it for free however.  Don't get me wrong, it's a fun gun to shoot, but not for me in a critical situation.  I have a full size Springfield xd 45 that goes with me hunting.  Very reliable weapon.

I have a G 40.  That long slide does take up a lot of recoil. It is no worse than my ported 17 L..  You will have slightly quicker follow ups, plus a little more umph in the round with the long slide.  Underwood Xtreme  for ammo.
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

I have a G20 that I love.  My favorite pistol.   But it's too big to CC.

My CC is a Ruger LC9S, which is fine but I am gonna get a Sig P365XL.    Same size and way more capacity.
I'm looking for more capacity in my CC, and narrowed down to Sig P365XL and Springfield Hellcat.
I just like the Sig better after shooting them.

Thanks for all the great responses all! I think I’ll have to put them in my hand to make the final call, but I’m really leaning towards the glock20. Too many good reviews about them. I’ll post a pic when I buy. Now I just have to find one

The liked the grip and how the xdm 10mm felt in my hand better than the G20 but ended buying the Glock and love it so far. I was going to buy the chest holster but figured it would get in the way of my bino harness so went with a kydex holster on the belt and it works great.

I really like my G29 with a longer wolf ported barrel. I also use the G20 magazine for the extra rounds. I use it mostly for archery backup, but I also CC it since it a compact. Very accurate and I really think the ported barrel takes pretty much all the kick out. The only downside to the ported barrel, although I haven’t shot it at night, I’m betting there’s going to be lots of muzzle flash.

I have a fhf bino harness with razco(?) holster for my g20c, carries pretty well just below the binos.

I have a Colt 1911 and XD 45, both feel great in my hand
Purchased a gen 4 G20 for the woods
I really dont think a 45 is enough for bear, better than nothing, but if your talking about saving your butt from being mauled, give me a high capacity 10mm and if your in grizzly country bowhunting, a can of bear spray as well  :twocents:

its like Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge

I would love to see the same pistol as the HK45 in an HK10mm. I wanted a 10mm when I began a search for a new woods/off road/camping carry sidearm. I liked the HK45 for the feel, and function. Hammer fire, safety placement, de-cocker. And, I like the mag release. So the pistol won me over to stay with 45acp vs going with something in 10mm. Truly, was not all that worried about staying with 45acp, it packs a good punch. Paul Harrell has a great video examining to two... 10mm vs 45acp

With Underwood 255gn Hardcasts I would carry a 45 acp with no hesitation in grizzly country. Most grizzled in the lower 48 are sub 500lbs. Brown bears? I normally carry a rifle.

This would be purely for hunting carry. And thanks all for the replies so far! Good info. Going to get a gunfightersinc chest holster once I decide.

Are people reading this? He's asking for woods carry options.

If you do carry around town, get the same thing for the woods. Ex. you carry a g19 around town. carry a g20 in the woods. Try to eliminate as much variability in platforms as possible so that whatever training you do is a direct translation. Also, if you're going to use a pistol for the woods, figure out how to practice shooting at targets that are at bear height, and moving toward you. You can look up how people do this. If you don't practice this, good luck hitting and getting follow ups off at something running toward you at bear height, at ~25mph in a worse case scenario.

Also, go try all of your top selections before you buy. They all fit different in the hand, feel better or worse for some etc....No amount of internet feedback or reading of reviews will supplement actually trying them out.
“There are people in my life who sometimes worry about me when I go off into the fields and streams, not realizing that the country is a calm, gracious, forgiving place and that the real dangers are found in the civilization you have to pass through to get there." - Gierach

I have shot most of the guns listed here. My preference is a Glock 29 with a pearce extension but I pack pretty light.

I honestly wouldn't feel undergunned with a full size 40 in our state as long as it was loaded with something like underwood xtreme penetrator.

https://www.howlforwildlife.org/take_action  It takes 10 seconds and it’s free. To easy to make an excuse not to make your voice heard!!!!!!

I carry am Xd .40 Cal daily and when hunting, If I was in Griz country, I would up that to my XDM 10 MM.
I have had many Glocks, a few Wilson's and they were up to the task.
It is all a personal preference. My preference is a large bore Semi, with multiple mags.
It is my experience, that there is no person (most importantly myself) who can reload a revolver as fast and with the capacity, that you can with a semi, with more capacity.

But go with what you know, and what you are familiar with.
Only 2 defining forces sacrificed themselves for you:
The American Soldier and Jesus Christ. One died for your freedom, the other for your soul.

My rock,
He trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle.

I would also recommend testing the ammo you use in the gun to see how it performs.
I got a salvaged deer a snohomish cop had to shoot to put down. He shot it from behind at 6', the bullet didn't penetrate the skull. I've tested 3 different bullets out of my fn 5.7 that had better penetration and damage at 25 yds on a cows head then his 9mm did.
I think the ammo is equally important.

You guys all seem to have something against revolvers.  I love my 44.  No doubts it'll change a big bears mind.  Just might be light on capacity of you have a run in with a bunch of wolves or something

My issue is that they aren't as versatile for in-town carry.

But if you want to buy me a raging hunter in 44 I promise I'll carry it all season   ;)

I run a revolver because you’ll never have a ftf, most situations you’ll fire 2 maybe 3 rounds, they just always work.
