Idaho Elk Tags sold out in June
« on: June 18, 2020, 09:00:44 AM »
So WA draw results come out and last I looked there were 2800 tags left right before our draw.  Then after our draw they sell out.  Coincidence?  I think not, who got one?

Always carry an idaho tag in my pocket.  The smartest thing idaho can do is up the price of there tags and mimic Montana.  Next year idaho will sell out 3 months earlier regardless of the price.  Our Washington herds our in bad shape due to missmanagement.  Oregons not far behind.

I don’t bother fooling around, just get in Feb.   10 to 15 years ago pre-wolf some units sold out on Dec 6th first day listed.  Could return to that....

I have a deer, Elk and wolf tag and am debating a bear tag.  My issue is, I'm just about as interested in bears as I am elk.  Spend a whole day chasing a bear if I see it. :chuckle: :chuckle:

We are going to hunt the first couple days in WA then head there until the 27th.  So right around the same time you will be there.

Lots of people sitting on unused vacation and stimulus checks this year. Not surprised to see them go fast after people saw they didn't draw in WA. I got my tag but had a few buddies miss out.

Those can only be purchased as second tags. Unless there is something new I'm missing.

Those types of posts you mention always intrigue me, there's not a lot of critical thinking occurring because non-resident tags have been capped for many years, there will no more non-residents hunters this year than there was 5 or 10 years ago! The truth of the matter is that there are more resident hunters as more and more people move to Idaho. The only real way to limit the number of hunters in Idaho is to cap resident tags!

Don't shoot me, I'm only providing commonly available information!

Just got a note from IDF&G.  There are NR deer tags still to be had but they expect them to sell out NLT 1 August.  For those who couldn't get an elk tag, there are still venison steaks on the hoof tags to be had  :)

From IDF&G:
Nonresidents: Buy your deer tags soon!
Projected sell out date is Aug. 1 for deer
Nonresident elk tags sold out on June 17, and Fish and Game projections based on current sales rates show nonresident 2020 deer tags (including white-tailed deer tags) could sell out by August 1. Actual sell-out date could be sooner if sales increase, which occurred with nonresident elk tags. Elk tags sold out about two weeks earlier than projected.

I agree with most of this but there could be more non resident hunters there this year than in years past.

The reasoning... resident hunters didn’t get to purchase a second elk tag at non resident prices since they sold out prior.  So if everyone goes there could be more non residents there this year than last because zero have been purchased by the residents.

no if ands or buts about it there will be more NR hunters this year and like thousands more. Normally there are several thousand tags leftover for NR and residents to buy as second tags. Those weren't additional hunters in the field they were just guys with 2 tags.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

I understand that scenario but it's relevent only to the last several years, when the quota first was created you could not buy a second tag, only one tag could be purchased, It was after the banking crisis and wolf invasion that second tags were allowed in order to sell out the non-resident tags that were not selling.

We really are only building back up to normal tag sales levels like we had back in the earlier 2000's before the banking crisis and wolf invasion. True that for the last several years as more residents purchased NR tags the number of NR hunters actually dipped, but the only increase in actual hunter numbers as compared to before the banking crisis will be more resident hunters, the number of residents is increasing, but the NR tag numbers I'm pretty sure are still exactly the same! One possible exception is that the special whitetail tags might be in addition to the historic NR quota.

Yes, last time I checked we have about 1800 left until sold out or July 31, whichever comes first, and if any are left they will go on sale to the public on Aug 1.

Is there anyway to find out who's got what and how many?  Just start making calls?

The outfitter tags are for clients who buy outfitted hunts, the number is based on historic use by outfitters and meant to keep businesses going, guides employed, and income for rural towns that rely on hunter dollars. There are three types of outfitter elk tag pools, the general season tags which are in one big pool for any outfitter to use, the outfitter allocation tags for capped zones which are only for the outfitters licensed in a particular capped zone, and outfitter allocation tags for controlled hunts with a specific outfitter in specific controlled hunt unit.

So if a hunter wants to book a hunt in a general season zone or a capped zone you can contact any outfitter licensed in the zone you want to hunt, if you want to book a hunt with an outfitter in a controlled hunt unit you need to contact a specific outfitter licensed in that unit.

Elk Zones (Including capped zones)
You can contact most any outfitter in a zone that you want to hunt.

Elk Controlled Hunts
There is a list of the controlled hunt units and how many outfitter tags for that unit in the regulations. You can get on the state website to see which outfitter to contact for the unit you want to hunt in.

What about leftover controlled tags in the second draw? Are those still only available to apply for with an outfitter?

I don't think any outfitter controlled hunt tags will be left and I don't think they ever go on sale to the public unless you contract with an outfitter. I get some controlled hunt tags and on a few occasions I have been able to get them for hunters just before season.

In August all the unsold outfitter tags go on sale

Those can only be purchased as second tags. Unless there is something new I'm missing.

nope and has been that way for years. You use to have to call and tell them what tag you wanted and they put you on a list and come august depending where you were on that list you got called and asked if you wanted a tag. I was called last year for Elk city. This year has changed and everything will go up Aug 13 online that are left over from the unsold outfitter tags

Not surprised with the price hike next year.
It is not just Idaho.  Montana and Wyoming draws were over subscribed.  Not everyone drew a general tag.

I’m hoping to be an Idaho resident within the next two years. Then I can piss and moan about all the damn coasties swarming over in droves to hunt my elk. :chuckle:

To buy a leftover controlled hunt elk tag, do you already have to have a general non resident elk tag in possession, and then transfer? Or can you buy these even if you missed out on the non res quota earlier on?

glad i have my idaho tag sitting in front of me on my desk.
was pretty impressive how they went from 2k to gone over the course of a few days.
next up is the thread "Too many washington plates in idaho! GO HOME!"
Yea, saw them at 2800 the day before the draw.  Crazy really.
A bad day out hunting is better than a good day at work!

How long has it been since they sold out on all non res archery elk tags??  I don't remember this happening before, it was going to be an automatic tag this year if we didn't draw anything in WA.  Not now, that sucks!
They sold out last year in August.

Correct.  The residents bought the extras.
