Any wolves in 10-A Idaho?

Will be after WT in 10A this November and wondering if there is much of a population of wolves in that unit? The tag is pretty cheap so thinking of getting the tag just in case I stumble across one of those big dogs.

Quite a few along dworshak. Both on the north and south sides of the reservoir.

There are a few dumb ones that run around pierce, but they usually get killed quickly

The Lolo area (10) and the Selway-Bitteroot (17) areas were ground zero for Idaho's wolf introduction.  Yes, I'm pretty sure 10A has wolves.  Yes, I would certainly have a wolf tag in hand.  Good luck on your WT hunt; hope you bag a big one

Was just north of Headquarters 2 years ago deer hunting.  Had a wolf tag in my pocket as well.  During a 5 day hunt, we heard them numerous times during the day, and pretty much every evening, but never saw one.  They are there.

Isn't Lolo the area that IDF&G has had to actually hire out helicopter shooting of wolves a few f the last handful of years to try to trim the wolf numbers?

It seems like 6ish years ago, they flew and shot 50ish wolves in just a couple days in there.   And if my memory is right, they have done helicopter shots in at least 1 or 2 other years there.


I remember reading that it was in response to plummeting elk numbers.
That must mean high wolf density.

Yes you are correct.  The following summer I was fishing the NF of the Clearwater and ran into a Warden...asked where I was camped and if I saw any wolves.  He said they did a good number on them in the winter but there was a few more they were looking for to give the elk a Chance.  I think it was 2015

If you join The Foundation For Wildlife Management ($35 for supporting membership), you can be reimbursed money from successful wolf hunts in ID. The Lolo area pays out the most.  You can earn a bit over 1,000 dollars per wolf depending on the area and season you hunt.  You have to provide proof, that you bought a license and tags, plus show receipts for fuel and any other expenses you paid during your hunt.  I have been a member since 2018.  Even though I don't live in ID, I don't want the wolves to continue westward into WA any more than they already are.  A trapper friend of mine from Kamiah introduced me to F4WM.  My wife and I tried to get us a wolf or 2, but were unsuccessful when we were there in 10 and 10A.  They are harder to hunt than you think.

I am in no way trying to recruit people for this organization.  It's just an awesome way for an out of state hunter to go to ID and be reimbursed your expenses for hunting wolves if successful.
