When to make that shot
« on: April 15, 2009, 08:50:59 AM »
Greetings to all and good luck on your hunts.  I'm heading out shortly myself.  I just wanted to take a second and share some information with you.  Most of you probably already know this but for you newer hunters I thought I would share.  When you have that big Tom coming in and your heart begins to beat a 1,000 beats per minute, and the sweat begins to drop off of you like rain, remember to not take the shot until the Tom lets down from his strut.

I know it's hard sometimes, but I'll tell you the shot damage is extensive (usually beyond repair) :'(to the back feathers and tail feathers when you shoot one in a strutting stance.  So if your planning on keeping some feathers on the bird or having it mounted in any way, it's best to take the time to take the shot when the turkey lets down from his strut.

Hope this helps and have a safe hunt  ;)  John

it's a less effective shot too...give them a couple quick cuts and it will usually make them come out of strut, stop moving and pick their heads up to look around.   BANG...
