Westside Mule Deer?
« on: June 20, 2020, 07:07:19 PM »
Just curious how far some mule deer travel over the passes.  This weekend I saw a mule deer doe along I-90 at snoqualmie central.  I know they get blended down in Klickitat too.

That's quite a ways from the crest.

Not much to tell
Closer to 40 years ago after looking at the pictures
Drove up Whitehorse
Had a 57 dodge 1 ton MH
Camped on a logged landing
Shot a 2x3 Muley
Drove it out hanging off the back couldn’t get it inside
Remember a sport shop in Darrington I think we stopped at
Saw a couple of dandies that were big mulies killed by locals
Laughed at mine
I was 21 or 22 at the time just happy to shoot a deer

I've seen some west side mulies. Always further west than expected. Whitehorse is definitely further than expected.

So you guys have not heard the term "Bench Leg Bucks" apparently,  :chuckle:

I’ve seen mule deer up the suattle just out of Darrington before. I’ve known a few guys, many years ago, kill 200lb. plus blacktails towards white chuck just out of Darrington as well. obviously mixed with the mule deer.
$5 is a lot of money if you ain't got it

The closer you get to the crest the more things are mixed. On the east side of the crest they are mixed on the west side they are mixed. Some just have more traits of one or the other. Calling a buck along the Pacific crest trail a Mule deer or blacktail is a mistake in my opinion. Just call them what they are. Bench bucks. Until dna testing comes back confirming pure genetics.

If you want to hunt a mule deer hunt closer to Idaho. A blacktail hunt along the coast.
