First time Duck Hunting - Potholes this weekend
« on: November 01, 2007, 11:45:46 AM »
My father in law (Hunter from 40 year ago or so) is taking me and my Step-dad to Potholes this weekend for Ducks.  The plan is for jump shooting primarily, but we'll try to bring blind material.

Couple/few questions though, as he hasn't been there in 40 years...

1. Help.
2. Now that "cry for help" is out of the way...I haven't have success finding decent maps of the hunting areas around Potholes online.  Anyone have a resource to share?
3. I've read the thread a few spots down called 'jump shooting' and get the idea we could have some success - any specific areas to try first? Hints on places to park, etc?
4. We don't have a dog - should we even bother with blinds?  He seemed to remember a number of smaller pods where the ducks would sorta drift to the shore after shot, and he swears by his 'casting for ducks' technique using an old fishing rod.
5. Crowds - should we expect a crowded hunting area?  Crowds are a plus and a minus.  If there's a crowd, they are there for a reason (ducks).
6. Time of day?  We're leaving western WA early - about 2:30a-3:00a (Maple Valley, WA area) to head over.  Figure a few hours driving - has us there about sunrise.  Any concerns or thoughts about our time tables?
7.  As this is my first time, and his in the last decade or more, hunting duck, we're not especially set on getting anything - this is more our first trip out to sorta set us up to get better...you know, the whole 'a journey begins with a single step' thing.

Any advice/comments/help provided is GREATLY appreciated.

Lots of public land: http://wdfw.wa.gov/lands/r2wlarea.htm

Good luck!

Horrible.  No more jump-shooting for me. lots of walking and sneaking only to see ducks fly away. :(

Not many ducks, either.  We heard some shooting - but it wasn't 'busy'.

I'm seriously considering going to an outfitter just to 'learn the ropes' - know what i mean?

I was at Potholes for the first time this past Saturday with the gentleman I bought my boat, motor and trailer from. We used his new boat, blind, motor and trailer. Had a wonderful time. We shot three hens and one drake. My shooting was horrible as well as my prowess of vision(not).
Hope you go back it was a very fine time and fun area to be in. :IBCOOL:

I had luck similar to dmp. My wife and I saw very few ducks (lots of geese) hunting the wasteways and Lind Coulee this past Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.  :(

We were footing it and I've hunted the area off and on for years. But, things do change.
