Wyoming draw.......next year
« on: June 25, 2020, 08:24:30 AM »
So my son is 9 and passed his hunters safety about a month ago. I've been buying Wyoming points for a while and wanted to build em up to draw a good tag there. I'm thinking maybe next year would be the best time to spend them, just so I could start getting points again for when he is legal to hunt there and I put us in for a general tag for us to go together. I will have 12 points for the draw next year and have been doing research on the best tag I could draw with 12. I've been looking at 87 and 101. My question is, if you've hunted Wyoming before or know about areas, if you had 12 points, what tag do you think would be best. I've hunted mulies in MT for 10 years or so, and have tagged every year. I'd love to hunt part of that migration in Wyoming.

You can't draw 101 with 12 points. If you pay the extra for special you "should" be able to draw 87.

Yeah 101 was one I was looking at in case I did decided to hold off a couple more years. I was looking at the 105-106-109 late tag. But I know a lot of that I would need guided.  I'm gonna call some biologist over there next week and pick their brain.

Probably arent gonna be able to catch up to 101 so I'd scratch that off your list. Maybe 102 but definitely not a guarantee. Just send it on 87 special

102 was 0% with less than 14 pts this year in the special. 12 points is a tough spot to be, enough to make you want the top tier but not quite enough to ever get there. Like Karl said burn em on something you can get. Unfortunately even 87 was a 0% draw at 12 points this year.

Unless something happens, you won't likely catch up in 101, it's crept 4 points in 4 years.  Last year it would have taken 14, in 2015 you could have gotten it with 10.

And that is issue. Since my son has passed his hunters safety, my "wants" have changed a bit.  12 points is a lot more than I want to spend on a general tag, but not enough for an elite tag. I also thought about holding off and putting us both in on a G tag when hes 13 or 14, so we could both hunt and have a tag. But I think finding a 12 point unit now then going general down the road sounds better. Like I said, I plan on calling Bios next week and maybe finding a couple of sleeper options.

Are you wanting your son to be able to hunt? WY minimum age for big game is 12 y/o. I am pretty sure you can't even buy points or tags until they are 11 and turn 12 during the season.

for deer, I like "L" in November  :twocents:

I believe he was thinking of cashing in his points now, and building back up for a gen when his son is of age

I’d save them a couple more years & them share me back in for a G tag. :dunno: :chuckle:  You’re kinda in no man’s land really & I don’t know that some of the LQ tags have as good of trophy potential as G or H.

You wont be able to draw G if you split 14pts most likely. That's another one that will continue to climb. I stand by my recommendation burn next year and start over with your son.

:yeah:  My pickle, if you can call it that!!! Is when I started putting in points I thought Wyoming would be a good state to build points then cash in on an elite tag. I figured I would let it go high enough till I'd draw a stud tag. Well here I am with a son that turns 10 in October, loves hunting like no other, and wondering the best way to go about this. Like was said earlier, it feels like no man's land. I either try to draw with 12 next year, or wait more years till I can. But now the father in me wants him to be part of everything I do. And yes, knowing that he cant hunt in Wyoming until hes 12, doesnt it seem crazy to burn 14 or 15 points on a general tag?? I mean, if i did find a unit worthy of 12, i could start building again, then we could still both go in let say, 5 years. Oh, and believe me, this isn't a  :'( :'( moment. Just friendly talk on what others would do

If it were me, I'd get a tag next year and go hunting with my son.  Then, by the time he is 12 you will have a couple points and the two of you can get on a system where one of you draws a tag for a 3 pt unit ever other year or so and hunt general tag stuff wherever on the other years.

I can't see a bunch of reason to get more than 3-5 points max.  Two is even better, plenty of really good hunts out there for 2-3 points once a guy crosses off the fairy tale stuff that is not realistic.

But, I get that some people would rather go big or go home and I'm glad they are holding out instead of jumping in on the lower point units.  It's all about what makes the most sense for you.

That's exactly why I'm asking opinions, because I'm sometimes too realistic about hunting. These points were originally meant for that one time hunt that I would go for that "giant".  I could go every year and shoot a 20 inch 4x4 and love every second. But I do know that waiting 15 years to draw a general tag seems crazy, knowing I coulda drawn 5 times in that timeframe. It would mean more to shoot 2 good bucks with my son, than 1 wall hanger. But it seems like both could happen, knowing that he cant hunt there till hes 12. Just needing to draw that tag next year, then build more points for him and I

I would put in for 87 in the special draw.
