Eastern Modern Cow Elk Tag
« on: April 12, 2009, 08:57:18 PM »
I decided I'm going to put in for Eastern Modern firearm for elk this year and I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice.  I am going to apply for three bull hunts, but for my last choice I want to do a cow tag so that I can just shoot an elk.  Does anyone have any advice on a unit to apply for a cow tag with the best chances of having a successful harvest?  Thanks.

I'd just apply for the cow hunt that has the highest number of permits. They all should be good, but dependent on weather. If you haven't done so, check out the harvest report for 2007. Last year's isn't available yet, and probably won't be this year before the application deadline.

I'd go with 342, but like bobcat said, all of those Yakima area units are good. Are you a master hunter, there is opportunity there without drawing a tag.

Not a master hunter.  I've had the Umtanum tag before and hated it because there were so many hunters and I had trouble finding the elk.

I understand completely, lots of hunters and a short season. That's what you'll find in all the units, that's why I'm planning on driving all the way to Montana to hunt cow elk...

Are there OTC tags for Montana, or do you have to put in for the draw to even hunt them?

there is a draw for non-residents, and mostly they are in high percentage of private lands.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
