Bearded Hens....how long do their beards get???
« on: June 28, 2020, 07:40:46 PM »
I have only seen a handful of bearded hens in my short time hunting.  Most have been pics of hens others have shot.  What would you say is an average length beard for the trophied bearded hen?

The reason I ask, the kids will be targeting one we have hanging around the property this fall and the beard is crazy long.  I would guess 6-7" and pretty full.  The other ones I have seen are in the 2-3" range.

I will see If I get trail cam pics to post up.  Feel free to post up pics of your bearded hens if you have them.

The ones we see probably aren't over 2.5".

I have one on the wall 5.5 inches.  They are all over around Cle Elum in the fall.  That is about the average of what I have seen and most are thin.  The one on the left.

8" is the longest we've got.

We see them quite often and kids have shot 2 or 3.  Beards around 5-6 inches. Never seen one with poults, wondering if maybe they can't lay eggs.

I called one in this year that had about a 6” beard. And pencil thin too. Had to be really close to see it.

She was in front of a camera a couple days ago so I will have pics in a couple weeks when I check the cam.  Hopefully I will have good pics of her beard.  She has 6 little ones in tow so the pics should be pretty cool.

I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but in this PC world do they identify as hens?

You mean momtoms?
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

It seems like it's usually between a jake and a 2 yr old tom in length. Not as thick though, usually pretty whispy. Very common around here
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

I saw one with poults last fall
