East/West Facing Slopes
« on: June 30, 2020, 08:37:53 AM »
I am curious on thoughts of east or west facing slopes?
Always talks about the north and south facing slopes but wondering if guys are neglecting east or west facing slopes? North slopes off the shade and cool temps the elk may be seeking in September and the south facing slopes and open ridge lines offer the feed areas they are looking for and always been told to e-scout for those types of areas and it makes sense.
What if all the ridge lines are running north/south so your only option is the east/west facing slopes? I have been escounting new spots in Idaho for elk (Salmon zone A tag) and first time I cant get boots on the ground before the season opens so want to make sure I am not neglecting anything.
I have been listening the elk talk podcast and watch just about every elk hunting youtube video there is and all the mentioned is target N/S facing slopes.
Maybe the south and north facing slopes are just that good and hold 95% of the elk so dont waste my time in others areas?  :dunno: Thats why I am asking the more knowledgeable folks in here.

Thanks!

Year round sun exposure and lack of exposure has the biggest impact on N and S slopes. East and West vary too but not nearly so much as N vs S. That's probably why you hear so much more about N/S.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.
