338 Lapua

Anyone using a 338 Lapua for all around hunting, not just the long range game?

Why would you?  Standard   .338 good to 500 yd.  like my Lapua tho.

I built one(Lapua) . It was fun but not that fun. I like my 2 338 Wins better.

If it floats your boat, go for it.  My line of thought is that deer and elk can only get so dead and much cheaper and less punishing rounds will do it.

Plenty of guys pack around crew served weapons these days, more power to them.  One of the great things about hunting is that you can make it whatever you want it to be.

I bought my 338 LM thinking it shot bullets...  turns out it shoots 5 dollar bills.

I haven't jumped on the Lapua bandwagon and I certainly wouldn't for an all round hunting gun. You'd have an easier time finding a factory gun in 338 RUM setup for general hunting. Performance between the RUM and Lapua is very close, so I don't think you'd ever notice the difference.

The Lapua had an advantage when it came to brass quality at one point, but now you can get ADG brass for the 338 RUM, so it's not an issue.

I heard a guy that that shot 180 grains without a break on his Lapua for general hunting then screwed on a brake and shot 300 grains for long stuff. 

Lapua with 225 Barnes is dead nuts to 500 yards no brake and then 300 gr SMK or Berger good to 1100 with brake.

Mines 1 lb heavier than my .338 win mag.   

However .300 win mag with 215 Bergers doesn’t give up much to Lapua at 1000 yards.

I needed an 1100 yard rifle that weighed under 10.5#.   The Lapua Carbon barrel fits.

Love my lapua but the 243 gets taken on most hunts.

Actually, the Lapua is more easily found, weather new or used. And in a lightweight Christensen with a Thunderbeast leading the way makes for a quiet, lightweight, hard hitting rifle..

So I received my 338 Lapua today, looking forward to using it this season, it's a McWhorter, and topping it off with a Nightforce 8x32. Comes with brakes for different loads 250 gr Sierra SGK and 300 gr Accubond. One hole groups with each.... Hoping it has enough foot lbs for my wife's Washington Mule deer if lucky she will get a stud 2x3 16" wide-Washington's finest!

Shot mine yesterday at 965 yards.  5” group not bad still working on load development.
