More Koro???
« on: July 21, 2020, 01:43:55 PM »
So has anyone decided which works better for marten/muskrat/civets, upside down or right side up when used in boxes?

Set right side up for Marten as I want it to snap the neck IMO !

Do they step on the pans or just push the pan out of the way with their bodies.

I've only trapped civets but I've done a lot of experimentation and IMO they should be set upside down. It is a toss up on getting them into the trap far enough when right side up.  Often times when set right side up they spring the trap too early and the jaw hits them in the face or forehead. That pushes them out of the trap. If you think about the arc the jaw travels when upside down it comes up under their chin. It cannot push them out of the trap even sprung at the same relative depth they have entered.
The other problem with civets a neck catch is not always lethal. A shoulder catch is better. The pan being on top they tend to get deeper into the trap before spring it.
I have come up with a new thing to try. A 3/4 angle iron piece attached to the box to act as a dislocator. Emphasis on attached to the box so the trap is unmodified. Here's a picture albeit a poor picture. Batteries dead on my camera. I will try to get a better picture later.

Better pictures. The paper clip holds the trap in place.

Thanks guys! Obviously they work ..  Securing the trap was one of my concerns. I'll report back if I come up with something workable.

How did you attach the chain and where?

Thanks! Where they have the cable is such a small opening.

All I have ever done is attach a piece of tie wire to the front of the trap where the striker hits.

So I looked at their cable and noticed they weren't crimped very well. I got out the hammer and pounded on them a bit. After some testing I'm thinking they won't pull loose. They held up to my 200 lbs of tugs so I'm happy with that.

Is strength the reason you've been clipping them off?

The 2 marten that broke the cable they both twisted enough to break the cable so I guess if you add a swivel and a shock spring plus double crimping the Ferrell it would work
