Getting the pack goats in shape
« on: July 20, 2020, 10:56:46 PM »
Getting ready for the upcoming back country hunts   Ran four goats on a 5 mile trip.  Two were carrying 24 lbs and my yearlings were running 5 lbs each.

We hike them 4 miles every Wednesday, and hit a trail every weekend.  I go through 3/4 bale of hay a day with 11 goats but also supplement with grazing time on our acreage.  They need access to minerals 24/7, hoof trimmings, shots, de worming, copper bolis, treats, brushings, leads, saddles, panyards, leashes, and collars.  You will also need to get a Scrapi ID through USDGA.  I have all my goats tattooed inside their ears, or base of the tail for my lamanchas.  I get my goats for about 25 dollars each from dairy farmers and the males are worthless to them.  Dairy goats IMO are the best for packing as they have great stamina.  My favorite breed is the Obershalli, very laid back!   Check out Packgoats.com.  Marc Warnke is a great source of info, has his own product line and has been a great mentor to my wife and I.

The COVID shutdowns sadly put a halt on a lot of hiking and now we are playing catchup, but will be ready come august for bear hunting.  Taking another member out for a overnight trip soon
