Box Canyon Dam or Boundary Dam
« on: August 06, 2020, 06:10:49 AM »
Taking boys out fishing and kayaking this weekend.  Both areas have first come first served camping and beautiful water.  We have gotten into smallmouth N of Box Canyon Dam.

If you had a choice, which would you fish?

We are planning on targeting bass and trout, but open to other open species.  A walleye would be awesome, if they are in there.

Any local bait shops to patronize and bend their ear?

Thanks.

Bait shop in Newport, might want to get some steel leaders and target some pike. Numbers are down from the past tho.  I haven’t targeted them in years, since they started the netting. Good luck!

Hmm. I've never used a steel leader for pike in the past.

But pike would be a fun fish to put the boys on.

:dunno:

I don't think I'll be passing through Newport.  Taking 20 out of Colville to 31.

Thank you for the tips.

On northern pike a steel or much heavier line leader is recommended.  Sharp teeth on those bad boys.

Agreed, it would be better.

I think I have some pretty heavy mono on my worm rod and braid on my heavier baitcaster.

Just got in some last bits for the Scotty rod holders and everything is falling into place.

I've been told either of those pools are great smallmouth fishing.

Either stretch is good, I like it above box canyon.  Edgewater is a good campground across from Ione that puts you close to good fishing.

Look for any cool water tribs or springs to find trout right now

Boundary has some good areas for trout, where the creeks meet the river. Good smallmouth fishing up that way too.

Hmm. Sounds like I can't lose.  As said, we got into smallmouth pretty good below Box Canyon, and we are going to try and stay at Edgewater since now I can't leave until later than I thought tonight. Maybe we'll try out above.

Thanks, guys, especially about the trout tips.

We ended up at Box Canyon.  Wind was swift downstream, and current was pretty brisk.  We hit a few pools and pulled out several small mouth, with a few keepers.

Much fun was had, and countless snarls were cleared.  I even got to fish a bit.
