Leupold scope rings?
« on: August 09, 2020, 03:07:30 PM »
Anybody have trouble with these? Have them with my new leupold vx5, was dead on shooting 1 inch group at 100 yards last time shooting. This morning I’m 1 inch left and 4 inches low at 100yds. No way I bumped the scope, wondering if these rings are junk.. only difference, this range is slightly down hill but if anything I woulda thought I woulda be shooting high.

Same ammo?   2 bolt caps or 4?   I dont trust 2 bolt caps.

Ya same ammo, They have 1 bolt on each side so I guess that’s 2 bolt caps. My old scope was never off in 15 years. If this happens again I’m going with different rings I think.

If they are the old style Leupold rings and bases, yes. The ones you rotate the scope into.

The PRW rings are rock solid. Switched everything over a dozen years ago and haven’t had an issue. They have 4 screws and the weaver base. Little more money, but worth it.

Did the rifle still group as well? Just the zero shifted?

Did anything else change between the trips? Clean? Remove barreled action? Anything else?

Check the torque on all the fasteners.

I have shot Leupolds for over 30 years. Last year I was done with them. After 2 out of 3 VX5 HD’s wouldn’t track worth $H&t.

I’m close, vx6-hd had to go back for turret thread issues.   I’m worried Leupold was late to party on dialing turrets and retrofit old technology just isn’t as robust as needed.   Trying Mark 5 will see if that holds up.   Otherwise its on to Match and Nightforce.

You must have bad luck. Been shooting Leupolds for 40 years. Never had a problem. Started shooting long range with Leupolds in the mid 90’s after laser rangefinders were available to the public. Used the Stoney Point turrets on old Leupolds. Never had a problem. I have transitioned to VX 6 & VX 5s and have always tracked perfectly. I have a friend that is followed by a black cloud. You two should get together.

I’m shooting 1000 rounds of 300 gr Lapua’s so might be pushing their envelope.

Not a 338 Lapua shooter, but a 6.75lb 8mm mag shooting 220g Hornady spire Points at 3200fps. Lots of recoil. No break, not for the beginner. Leupolds still tracked perfect.

Still grouped well just 4 inches low and a inch left. One thing that was different my cousin said could have messed with things is i shot out of a lead sled last time and I used sand bags this time! I felt steady with both but he said he had this difference with both types of rests. I will make adjustments next weekend and see how it goes I guess. Frustrating for sure

Ditch the lead sled. Since the rifle couldnt recoil that is most likely the difference.

I’ve a fairly large bag full of discarded Leupold rings. They work better than Chinese rings but in my experience not for long.
Years ago talked with Gale McMillian about them. He had several conversations with Leupold about their rings not being manufactured within close enough tolerances hoping they would step up. He said they they refused to change & advised them he would never use their rings.
I’ve had them loosen up numerous times and had other issues with fit. Now I just toss them in the discard bag if they are attached to something I’ve bought.
There are a lot of high quality scope ring manufacturers. Leupold isn’t on that list. Good scopes but crappy rings.

All my guns have leupold rings including 2 light weight.338 Winchester mags and I had a 416 Remington. Never had a problem with any of them
