"Building"my own rifle
« on: August 09, 2020, 08:27:42 PM »
I'm looking to build my own rifle for future Alaskan hunts, caribou, moose, maybe sheep and goats.  My question is, is it possible to get "custom" quality accuracy by buying a trued barrelled action, stock and glass and assembeling it myself?  I don't reload so would be trying factory ammo that it would shoot well.  Thanks

Yes, you can get the same results and you don't have to pay high dollar for someone to put the gun together for you.

I have a a 40 year old weatherby vanguard .300 wm that has probably been cleaned 20 times.  Barrel is pitted, blueing Worn off, replacement Bell & Carlson stock paint 30% worn off.   Shoots factory 215 gr Bergers in 3” groups at 500 yards.

You don’t have to go custom for accuracy.

With a trued barrelled action all you need to do is bed your stock - not hard.   Do that  and you will be As accurate as a gunsmith assembled.   But your savings are in the cost of bedding and maybe another $300?

I built a 338 Lapua cause I wanted one. Stiller action, Ron Smith barrel, custom bottom metal and a Manning stock.  It was fun and I had help with machine work.
