What are some items that you have forgotten, or, things you have forgotten to do before you departed for previous elk hunts? I'm talking those "holy hell, I forgot my ________ or forgot to _________ before I left items. I know we all pretty much operate on some type of physical checklist that we update each year, but, the best laid plans seem to always have a fault or in this case, a forgotten item or not doing something that you needed to prior to departing. OK, let's hear em……

On a past hunt I have forgotten ________________________________, and/or, forgotten to do ______________________________ prior to heading out.

For me, it's pretty much the case that I forget I don't have to bring everything I own on every hunting trip.

For archery elk, I have forgot shorts for around camp a few times but nothing a knife can't take care of using my old camp pants.

Heck, isn't that how we "used" to make shorts/cut offs anyway?   :chuckle:

A few years back, I was several days into my hunt when I realized I’d forgotten to swap out the arrows in my quiver for the ones in my arrow case....the ones with broadheads on them!

I had a quick shooting session with my fingers a few years back after forgetting my primary AND my backup release. I'm pretty much the smartest guy around sometimes. I used to shoot fingers only so it wasn't the absolute end of the world but I didn't end up drawing back all weekend so it didn't cost me.

I also forgot my boots one year on a late season hunt. Trudged around in my slip on merrells all day in soaked cold feet. Fortunately that one was only a day hunt.

Since I only hunt elk in the backcountry, I have the opposite problem.  I'm so paranoid about forgetting something that I end up packing too much stuff.

But I like to keep backups for major items at the trailhead in my truck.  Spare water filter, spare jetboil, spare batteries, spare arrows/bullets, spare food, etc.  So that has helped me reduce my over-packing habit in recent years. And thankfully Oregon went paperless for tags/license, so the multiple years I forgot to bring my tags with me from WA are no more (and now I'm an OR resident, so it's moot anyway).

 :yeah:

I take too much, then try to figure out how to keep the stuff I brought from getting stolen from camp as I don't use it
