Reloading lube
« on: August 17, 2020, 01:14:18 PM »
As with most things in life, all good things come to an end sooner or later.

That being said, the case lube I was using is no longer available, and has not been for some time. A small amount of it lasted me for several decades.
I am wondering what others are getting good results with these days.  I reload both regular shouldered and belted mag cases.
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

Hornady one shot spray works good for me.

I use the Lee stuff, but I'm sure there is better out there.  The Lee stuff works great, but it takes forever to apply it if you are doing a bunch of loading and hard to get consistent lube on each case.  When I finish the tube I'll try something else, but that won't be for many years as the stuff goes a long, long way.

Get some Lanolin and Alcohol.

Look up "6.5guys Case lube" for the details, easy and SUPER cheap to make yourself, works fantastic.

I used Lee, which is OK.  It's kind of a pain.

I've used One Shot, which is fine for a lot of cases at once.

But for heavy resizing work, such as milsurp machine gun cases back to SAAMI, gear oil works great.  Clean with acetone or similar and air dry or wet tumble.

For moderately heavy sizing, I like Imperial Sizing Wax.

Might take a look at that stuff.  It's strange how sometimes thinking outside the box can produce some great results, but sometimes it bites you on the backside.
As strange as it might sound, I used International Harvester steering gear oil that I picked up when I was wrenching ag equipment for them in the 70's.  It's very thin and and extremely slick.
I rarely full length size, except for certain small rifle calibers and/or new brass.
Thanks all for the suggestions.

I think STP is the same thing as the RCBS case lube.  That's what i use now.  A quart of STP will last me for.... not sure as I'm still using it.

Hornady one shot is great as long as you shake it up good every single use.  Otherwise it separates and you use up all the lanolin first half of the can and the rest will be mostly alcohol.  This is where a lot of folks go wrong with it.  For small batches I like imperial

+1 for pure lanolin and 99% isopropyl alcohol.  No more stuck cases....ever! You have to tumble after using this though, not before.

I've been using Frankford Arsenal Case Lube Pump bottle for years ($9.99 at Midway USA). I use a little rubbing alcohol on a rag to remove excess after loading.
