How long is too long?
« on: August 25, 2020, 04:40:47 PM »
Not gonna name any names at this point but how far past the estimated completion date do you start making phone calls to your taxidermist wondering what the heck? My son & I have been waiting 23 months for a mule deer & antelope wall pedestal mounts. He estimated 12-18 months & we haven’t heard a peep. What are your guys thoughts on this & course of action? Thanks

Just send an email or give a call. No reason there shouldn't be open communication.

23 months really isnt that outlandish.  If you said  63 months i think id take a guess at the taxi in question.   :chuckle:

If they said 12-18 I would call at 12 and certainly at 18 months.  It isn't a perfect world, but the one I have dealt with has a good handle on when he will get it out and does what he says.

My issue would be lack of or no communication.

Just hope they aren't sitting on somebody's wall...with everything going on in the world it seems like they would have "extra" time to get it done...I would reach out with very specific questions  :dunno:

Couple thoughts...

1.  Have you attempted calling or communicating?  If not, pick up the phone and make a call.  Be super cool about it and just see how things are going.  You have to remember that everyone has been effected by our current pandemic (good bad or indifferent).  There may be a very logical explanation.  It would be nice if they called you, but hey....they may be busy trying to catch up.

2.  Most deer / elk / antelope / etc....are done in 12-14 months so 18 seams to be a long wait time.  Bear / cats / dogs / rugs / etc....it is not uncommon to take 18-24 months.

I would be concerned if the communication was difficult.  If they answer and talk with you, given the current state of affairs our country is in two years doesn't get my panties in a bunch.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I will contact him when I get back from my Wyoming hunt next month after the 2 year mark has passed. I know he gets annoyed by the is it done yet guys. If I kill a wall hanger, I’ll probably try someone else next time.

I'm a patient guy and fairly trusting.  I have a big otter in for a full body mount that I dropped off in early January 2018.  It was supposed to take 12 months.  I have been in communication every 6 months'ish.  Good taxi's get burried.  The problem is bad guys use the same excuse.  Hang in there and keep checking back.
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

All good points, for me I hold onto the rack to admire until it's time to mount up, pretty much solves it for me.

As a business owner I routinely get calls before deadlines have passed just checking on timing and status. Never knew that was supposed to be a bad thing or offend me. I wouldn't show up at his shop red faced screaming at him but I can't imagine a reason someone would get upset by someone checking in on a timeline?

If  quoted 12 to 18 months and it's at 23 month's I wouldnt be in a huff. But I would definitely be checking in sooner than later.

I'm in a nearly identical situation and time frame. I gave him a call and got a quick update. It's not strictly first in, fist out, as apparently they do some things in batches, which makes sense. Communication is key.
