Warm weather tactics
« on: August 28, 2020, 03:42:00 PM »
Just curious and also wanting to start this to hopefully advise some of the newer guys and gals here in the forum that have maybe have had to deal with or maybe haven’t had to deal with the warmer temps and also meat care during the warm days of September.  :dunno:

Hunt slow, process fast.  Blow flies and yellow jackets are not your friends.

For me where i hunt the first 2 weeks i only hunt the evening hunt (I know i am missing time in the field) but due to heat meat care etc thats what i do and i do pretty good.
If i am hunting the last week and half i usually will hunt mornings and evenings as the weather usually has cooled alot by then, not unusual to have temps at or very close to freezing some nights which keeps the bugs down.
Also it can be really cool to put the woods to bed, sundown can be just as much fun as sunup.

To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

I will usually hunt the first few hours of day light and then head back out for an evening hunt. Meat care is crucial for me being I usually archery hunt eastern Washington for early deer and then head off after elk. Usually also do better in the evening, locating them in the morning and putting them to bed for the afternoon and then trying to put the stalk on them later in the evening has been productive for me.

I usually do an early morning, midday and evening hunt. I got a decent little four point whitetail in the middle of the day one year when he was doing his midday walk. It's probably in the 2014 buck thread. Luckily I have water access not too far from where I'll be so my routine has been to bring the animal back to the hose and hose out the body cavity really well and then skin and repeat with the hose. Then I just hang in the garage on the hoist and gambrel or in the basement if its too hot. I did get destroyed by the bees one year. It was bad. I am not technically allergic but after about twenty stings my chest felt kinda weird but it went away luckily. Same thing happened to me with ground hornets one year. Got stung at least about 30 times that time!
