Scope mount questions

I feel kind of dumb asking these questions, but the folks at HuntWA are always so helpful and knowledgeable, so here goes, normally I just buy whatever fits my gun and call it good.  I've never really done any research or got very technical when it comes to scopes and scope mounts.  But whatever is on sale and find a mount that fits the gun and the scope and slap it on.  I recently got a brand new Savage 110 Accufit in .25-06.  Trying to find a scope mount that fits it and went to Midway and there are several styles to choose from.  What are the advantages/disadvantages to a low, medium or high scope mount?  With regards to scopes, what are the advantages/disadvantages to a 1 inch scope or a 30 mm scope?  Thanks for any information.

the height depends on the bell of the scope,if you have a 40mm you will most likely need a medium.if you have a 50mm use high.higher rings will give you more adjustment for longer range shooting but also raises your cheek off the rifle.style and brand not as important as long as they are quality.

30mm scopes generally stronger and have more adjustments for longer range shooting.also more ring clamping area,less likely for scope to move.wider field of view.

and also they do have scopes that are cut out on the bottom of the bell so you can still use the lower rings even with the 50 mm bell.you really want your face to fit rifle and your eye to be at center with scope with cheek positioned correctly on rifle.

the higher comb on the stock will also make higher rings for bigger bells fit better,if you have adjustable comb on your stock.if not and your face doesn't quite fit perfect you just build up the cheek rest of the stock until your eye is centered to scope and comfortable.

That's one of the nice things about the accufit stocks is all the adjustments you can make!

My scopes are all 40mm objectives, as that is the biggest I can go to have the scope mounted low enough. I use low rings if possible, but sometimes mediums are necessary. All my scopes are 1 inch tubes. What I know about the 30mm scopes is that they are heavy, and intended for long range shooters, which I am not.

A good ring to use would be the Burris Signatures. They have a plastic insert inside the rings which eliminates the need to lap the rings. I prefer the Weaver style, like these:

If you have an adjustable cheek piece that will give you considerably more flexibility.  Most of my rifles have 30mm tube scopes I only have a couple with 1in tube and another with 34mm tube.  The vast majority have 50 or 56 objectives.  Except for a couple, everything I have uses a picatinny rail and rings setup.  The scopes with 50's I use a NF pic rail and low .885 NF rings. 

I prefer to use a rail because it gives you more adjustability with the scope forward and back.  I have a 1in. tube Vortex HD LH on my 20-222 and it has a old school one piece dove tail mount and rings setup that works great as well.

There are lots of options and brands out there that make good stuff so whichever company you decide to go with if you buy their quality stuff and not so much their low end product/s, you'll likely be happier in the long run.

Get the best glass you can afford.  That goes without saying.

Then, get the best mounts you can afford.  It makes absolutely ZERO sense to have cheap 2-screw rings holding the two most important components of your rifle system together.

Contrary to what some people say, height over bore is irrelevant. (within reason)

The size of the objective and it's clearance to the barrel notwithstanding, it's more important that one fits the scope height to a comfortable cheek weld.

Generally speaking, the larger the diameter of the tube the stronger the scope and more elevation adjustment you'll have.

FWIW, I'm a huge fan of the beastly NF ATACR scopes coupled with their xTreme rings, or Spuhr or MDT.  Bomber reliability and repeatability.

For the rifle the op is talking about i would just put a 20 moa rail on it with a set of Leupold standard rings and a 50MM objective lens scope in 30mm.GET WHAT YOU WANT AND ONLY BUY IT ONCE.

What is the intent of the new rifle ?  That alone determines what scopes and budget you should address.  Once you select the scope, then look at quality rings/bases etc. that will mount your new scope as low as possible.  I have rails and rings and I also have Talley lightweight rings/bases (which I really like for a hunting rifle).

Dont buy what your not going to need.  If its a hunting rifle, unless you intend to really reach out there, 20moa rail is not needed in my opinion.  Yes, I do have and use both 20 moa and no bias rails.

Let your scope of choice tell you what mount to go with.  You can use measurements from most scope mfg's and ring height numbers from ring mfg's to determine ring height.....simple math.  There is a ton of info  and youtubes on google to help you get it right.
