Question on synthetic velevt
«
on:
September 11, 2020, 09:08:23 PM »
So my taxidermist said the velvet on my deer i shot last week was in pretty bad shape not only from the crash he took but from the heat as well and looked like he was ready to shed it real soon
My question and one he asked would i like to do the synthetic velvet or just go with stained antlers. He was velvet when i first saw him the day before i got him and kinda hard to get a velvet deer in washington. So i'm asking if anyone has done the synthetic ? Pros and cons and if they like it. Thanks

I know nothing about fake velvet, but he was in velvet when you got him, so i would think fake velvet would be a better representation of your animal as you got him than fake staining would be. Just my
do what makes you happy, and good job.

I would think if he was a good taxi the velvet should be easy to do. I say go for it!

I have a coworker who had a buck done with the artificial velvet and was very happy with how it turned out. I believe his taxi sent the antlers to a place down in Oregon to have the velvet applied.

Real or fake, it never looks quite right. If you strip it you are going to have a lot of "ground shrinkage". I say strip it and do a euro on it, it will make him look bigger.

I talked to a taxi about it a few years ago when I shot a forkhorn whitetail in velvet I was going to try to preserve myself. He earned me it wouldn't turn out right for me and he wasn't wrong lol
He said he sends em down to Oregon as well and they do their thing and send them back and he finished the mount. I've looked at a couple of mounts and with one exception they all looked pretty good. I'd go for the artificial.

A taxidermist that uses this fourm shot this whitetail buck in velvet and decided to go with the artificial look.

They can also color match the velvet. The buck above and another euro I have were sent to Oregon. I have it done by Research Mannikin.

That's a nice archery buck. I think you should attempt to have it preserved as is. My son shot one kinda like that, that we had preserved. Turned out good. Kinda looks like it is transitioning from velvet to shed which it was.. Artificial always looks phony to me.

Now question being is there any Pope & Young scorers on here that can tell me if i can score him with artifical velvet or not. Taxi says no but someone else said yes he came up with 135 and some change i came up with more closer to 145ish. Thought he would go more but guess my on the hoof scoring is a bit off
. Doesn't really matter he looks sweet on the wall but just like to know for future reference.
